Publisher's Summary

From the best-selling author of The Secret Life of Bees, an inspiring autobiographical account of personal pain, spiritual awakening, and divine grace...

Blending her own experience with an intimate grasp of spirituality, Sue Monk Kidd relates the passionate and moving tale of her spiritual crisis, when life seemed to have lost meaning and her longing for a hasty escape from the pain yielded to a discipline of "active waiting". Full of wisdom, poise, and grace, Kidd's words will encourage us along our spiritual journey, toward becoming who we truly are.

Basically a research article on self-help for the empty Nester.

Based on some type of new age bible, she tries to bring single bible verses to life using caterpillars, butterflies, and some of her life experiences living in an affluent, ivory world. The audible first 4 chapters is interrupted too often with references from scriptures. Chapters 5 through seven are enlightening and interesting. The remainder of the book reiterates chapters 5 through seven. A novel about caterpillars and butterflies going through life would have been more entertaining. I truly loved her previous novels. Also the narrator was very dry. Maybe a different narrator could help bring this book to life.

Incredibly inspiring

The narrator was perfect for the lyrical prose that Sue Monk Kidd graciously shares with her readers/listeners. This is a must for anyone in the 2nd half of life who wants to experience spiritual healing and growth.

so meaningful and articulate. I felt as though the author had lived my last two years herself and written the experience for me.

A must have for the spiritual wrestling

This book. What a gift of encouragement and validation of the internal wrestle that occurs when we whisper “yes”. To hear it from another gifts depth to the pain, and also gifts the new life that emerges. My hope, is that we all find the courage to embrace the invitation. For in the acceptance of the invite, true life can be lived. No matter how old we are.

Waiting is Never in Vain

What a masterpiece of heart and soul. This gave me more questions than answers, but I assume that is the point. Every life is different and every period of waiting comes with specific questions to the person. I'm not a religious person and there were a lot of religious references and they all were helpful and thought provoking. This book works for religious or non-religious folks because there is so much to spirituality. It is what you create. Such a helpful book to read as I edge toward 40. This period of waiting has made me feel lazy or aimless and it's incredible to see that you should never force awakening. It will come.
