Publisher's Summary

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Millions of people have fallen in love with Auggie Pullman, an ordinary boy with an extraordinary face—who shows us that kindness brings us together no matter how far apart we are. Listen to the book that inspired the Choose Kind movement, a major motion picture, and the critically acclaimed graphic novel White Bird.

And don't miss R.J. Palacio's highly anticipated new novel, Pony, available now!

I won't describe what I look like. Whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse.

August Pullman was born with a facial difference that, up until now, has prevented him from going to a mainstream school. Starting 5th grade at Beecher Prep, he wants nothing more than to be treated as an ordinary kid—but his new classmates can’t get past Auggie’s extraordinary face. Beginning from Auggie’s point of view and expanding to include his classmates, his sister, her boyfriend, and others, the perspectives converge to form a portrait of one community’s struggle with empathy, compassion, and acceptance. In a world where bullying among young people is an epidemic, this is a refreshing new narrative full of heart and hope.

R.J. Palacio has called her debut novel “a meditation on kindness”—indeed, every listener will come away with a greater appreciation for the simple courage of friendship. Auggie is a hero to root for, a diamond in the rough who proves that you can’t blend in when you were born to stand out.

Must-read for kids!

I use this book in my 5th grade classroom each year and the kids applaud at the end every time. Without giving details away, there are also parts that brings tears to the young readers' eyes too. The school setting is relatable, in addition to each character's family and home life events. The main character, August, helps teach empathy to the reader throughout the book. There are so many themes that offer great class discussions. I highly recommend this book!

Be kind

This book shows how mean people can be! Wonder has a wonderful moral: Be kind. You just need to be the bigger person. Like the part where Henry and Amis rescue Jack and Auggie from the dangerous seventh graders in the woods at the nature retreat. They changed there ways. And that is awesome. It teaches kids that if you see someone getting bullied to stand up for them. It is a wonderful story highlighting kindness, friendship, and most of all, BRAVERY

A YA Book for Our Time and for All Times

In these dark times when kindness seems in short supply, this book shines forth as a beacon. Well-crafted three-dimensional characters and authentic dialogue move the plot forward and keep readers engaged. August, the main character, wins our hearts from the get-go with his honesty, humor, and intelligence. We cheer him on through all the obstacles he faces. His story may not be our own, but it has a sense of universality. August is relatable, and we want him to overcome because we want to overcome all that life throws at us. I recommend this book highly for middle school readers and anyone of any age. I'm 66 years old, and this book took me back to middle school. The narrator of August's voice was outstanding as were all the other narrators. I'll be looking for other books by this author.

Fantastic Family Read!

I listened to this book on audible with my kids as part of their school work. It was nothing short of fantastic!

The writing was really engaging for my kids (ages 12 and 11) but it didn’t shy away from tough topics and tough feelings. Even though hard subjects were covered, it was beautifully done and made for some amazing conversation points.

As a parent I adored the various POVs and how it unfolded deeper meaning to the themes for my kids. I loved everything about this book!

Such a great story to introduce diversity in children and families. A really great story for children new to middle schoolers.

Great read for road trip with a 5th grader

Ever so much to talk about during and after our trip. When we had stops, I found it helpful to sit with our thoughts before getting on with whatever we needed to do. Themes include kindness, growing up, taking care of others, family situations, and school cliques.
