About this listen

Enter the world of the Others in the first novel in New York Times bestselling author Anne Bishop’s thrilling fantasy series: a place where unearthly entities—vampires and shape-shifters among them—rule the Earth and prey on the human race.

As a cassandra sangue, or blood prophet, Meg Corbyn can see the future when her skin is cut—a gift that feels more like a curse. Meg’s Controller keeps her enslaved so he can have full access to her visions. But when she escapes, the only safe place Meg can hide is at the Lakeside Courtyard—a business district operated by the Others.

Shape-shifter Simon Wolfgard is reluctant to hire the stranger who inquires about the Human Liaison job. First, he senses she’s keeping a secret, and second, she doesn’t smell like human prey. Yet a stronger instinct propels him to give Meg the job. And when he learns the truth about Meg and that she’s wanted by the government, he’ll have to decide if she’s worth the fight between humans and the Others that will surely follow.

I honestly absolutely love this book was so glad it was on here as I can no longer get the first two from the library as their "too old" and no longer carry them, and wanting to re-read them I was glad to at least have this option despite rather having a physical book in hand to read. the only negative I have for it is that I wish the narrator had more range in her voice to differentiate the characters better and to better depict the characters, also she has such a soft voice that at it made me sleepy... and I still have the second one to listen to 😅 other then that it was wonderful.

Anne Bishop gives an entirely different view of shifters and vampires in this series and makes you wonder what a wolf becoming human would be like. She teaches tolerance of differences in an entertaining way and you can’t help but feel for the characters. The readers voice is pleasant and she pronounces some names differently than I did when reading the books, but does a good job.

Loved this story about coexistence and conflict between humans and supernatural creatures [enough to overlook plot holes and a helpless heroine]. I became invested in the characters, and enjoyed the parallels with our real world. The narrator is fantastic and has just the right tone and inflection for each character. I recommend it for a unique twist on werewolf, vampire, and psychic tales. Note: There is violence, but no sex in this story.

Fantastic start of this series, highly recommend. Great world building and fascinating characters. No sexual scenes, just really great urban fantasy!

One of the best series starters I've ever read.

An enjoyable read. Good narrator. Fun characters. And the book had some decent tension running through it.
