For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Every day we experience the uncertainty, risks, and emotional exposure that define what it means to be vulnerable or to dare greatly. Based on 12 years of pioneering research, Dr. Brené Brown dispels the cultural myth that vulnerability is weakness and argues that it is, in truth, our most accurate measure of courage. Brown explains how vulnerability is both the core of difficult emotions like fear, grief, and disappointment, and the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, empathy, innovation, and creativity.

Sensationalist but great ideas
I often criticize self help for sensationalism with much fluff and a lack of substance, but Jen was able to successfully have the classic energy of self-help, as well as accentuate interesting ideas backed up by examples. I find myself agreeing with most things said here, but the affirmation in her own words is enough to listen to this book, and I imagine younger readers unaware of such ideas (like manifesting thoughts, importance of monitoring self-talk, and intentionality) could unlock a world of perspective.

Saved my life
Soo my father, the light of my life passed away 2 years ago. Since then I have been in a complete tailspin. Dating horrible guys diagnosed with depression and anxiety. Doctors gave me all the pills. My boyfriend who I was hoping I’d marry just broke up with me because of how bad my anxiety was. So I was at a horribly low place. Well this book saved me. Brought me out of a place where my chest was hurting all the time. And opened my eyes to EVERYTHING that was in my reach, simply by me thinking it. She was talking directly to me the whole time. THE WHOLE TIME. I’m not on pills, I’m not suicidal, I’m working to live in the now. Jen Sincero is my therapist. I’m on my second round of this book. And well I love it.

Disappointing narration
I love this book fully 100% but I couldn’t get through the first chapter of the narration. The person narrating was too fast and lacked the full range of expressions that the author tries to convey. I’ve listened to a version of the author reading it fully and it’s honestly why I was hooked on this book but it’s sad I’m not enjoying this version of the book.

Life changing
I needed a change in life. I’m
Not so optimistic never have been. I once was an amazing mom but 4 kids later and I let the little things consume me and the joy be removed. I let the thoughts and cares of the world change who I was.
This book reset me. I am and will reread this book several times. If I wasn’t a nursing student I would listen to it once a month. The audio being read by the author makes it authentic and keeps you listening.
If you are struggling to find a balance in life, looking for peace, or to reset. YOU NEED THIS BOOK.

She’s a product of her generation, but stay open.
NOTE: Working through this book still and will update once I’m done.
The author is corny at times and highly problematic at other times — note to all white women that mimicking Black English vernacular for comedic effect is really dumb at best and utterly racist at worst — but even if that rubs you the wrong way (as it did me) I would still encourage you to stay open.
I have no doubt there are loads of other books like this one written by WOC and more aware white women/people (and we should all read those as well) but this book is still a solid entry into the self-help pantheon — despite the writer’s obvious/ more offensive flaws.

This is the answer to my prayers
Everything I’ve battled with, mostly internally, was touched on in this book. It’s very easy to listen to throughout your day, and the points the author makes aren’t never before heard of, but they’re messages you NEED to hear again. I’m not even finished with the book, but I’ve already recommended it to all of my friends, and want them to read it before they go off to college.
An hour in, and I felt empowered and more prepared to tackle the rest of my adulthood. This book helped me ask the necessary questions and gave me tools to live my best unapologetic life.
If you struggle with “playing the victim” and have a “woe, is me” mindset, you must listen to this!

It's good but not great.
I have the paper back of this book and I do like it but it's definitely not the greatest. It has some good ideas and it is a nice read through once. But, I don't really like the whole 'believe/give to universe and it will give back' because that is bull. I also wish I could find a self help book that is not religious and all about giving everything to faith or whatever. I want a book that is about taking 100% of your crap and owning it. Like I said the book is okay. And has some helpful points. I would recommend reading it at least once because it isn't awful.

I just didn’t like it
It was very repetitive and not very helpful and I just wasn’t very fond of the way the author read it

Nothing New
Feels like a summary of cliches and concepts previously discussed (better) in other books. Narration was grating at times.
