Vorgestern bin ich glücklich wieder hier angelangt, und gestern hat der feierliche Fronleichnamstag mich sogleich wieder zum Römer eingeweiht. Gern will ich gestehen, meine Abreise von Neapel machte mir einige Pein; nicht sowohl die herrliche Gegend als eine gewaltige Lava hinter mir lassend, die von dem Gipfel aus ihren Weg nach dem Meere zu nahm, die ich wohl hätte in der Nähe betrachten, deren Art und Weise, von der man so viel gelesen und erzählt hat, ich in meine Erfahrungen hätte mit aufnehmen sollen.

Früh drei Uhr stahl ich mich aus Karlsbad, weil man mich sonst nicht fortgelassen hätte. Die Gesellschaft, die den achtundzwanzigsten August, meinen Geburtstag, auf eine sehr freundliche Weise feiern mochte, erwarb sich wohl dadurch ein Recht, mich festzuhalten; allein hier war nicht länger zu säumen. Ich warf mich ganz allein, nur einen Mantelsack und Dachsranzen aufpackend, in eine Postchaise und gelangte halb acht Uhr nach Zwota, an einem schönen stillen Nebelmorgen. Die oberen Wolken streifig und wollig, die untern schwer. Mir schienen das gute Anzeichen.

Ja, ich bin endlich in dieser Hauptstadt der Welt angelangt! Wenn ich sie in guter Begleitung, angeführt von einem recht verständigen Manne, vor fünfzehn Jahren gesehen hätte, wollte ich mich glücklich preisen. Sollte ich sie aber allein, mit eignen Augen sehen und besuchen, so ist es gut, dass mir diese Freude so spät zuteil ward. Über das Tiroler Gebirg bin ich gleichsam weggezogen. Verona, Vicenz, Padua, Venedig habe ich gut, Ferrara, Cento, Bologna flüchtig und Florenz kaum gesehen.

Nicht wie bei dem letzten Abgange des Paketboots wehte diesmal ein förderlicher frischer Nordost, sondern leider von der Gegenseite ein lauer Südwest, der allerhinderlichste; und so erfuhren wir denn, wie der Seefahrer vom Eigensinne des Wetters und Windes abhängt. Ungeduldig verbrachten wir den Morgen bald am Ufer, bald im Kaffeehaus; endlich bestiegen wir zu Mittag das Schiff und genossen beim schönsten Wetter des herrlichsten Anblicks. Unfern vom Molo lag die Korvette vor Anker.

Bei guter Zeit sind wir hier angelangt. Schon vorgestern verfinsterte sich das Wetter, die schönen Tage hatten uns trübe gebracht, doch deuteten einige Luftzeichen, dass es sich wieder zum Guten bequemen werde, wie es denn auch eintraf. Die Wolken trennen sich nach und nach, hier und da erschien der blaue Himmel, und endlich beleuchtete die Sonne unsere Bahn. Wir kamen durch Albano, nachdem wir vor Genzano an dem Eingang eines Parks gehalten hatten, den Prinz Chigi, der Besitzer, auf eine wunderliche Weise hält, nicht unterhält, deshalb auch nicht will, dass sich jemand darin umsehe.

Als die erste Gondel an das Schiff anfuhr (es geschieht, um Passagiere, welche Eil' haben, geschwinder nach Venedig zu bringen), erinnerte ich mich eines frühen Kinderspielzeuges, an das ich vielleicht seit zwanzig Jahren nicht mehr gedacht hatte. Mein Vater besaß ein schönes mitgebrachtes Gondelmodell; er hielt es sehr wert, und mir ward es hoch angerechnet, wenn ich einmal damit spielen durfte. Die ersten Schnäbel von blankem Eisenblech, die schwarzen Gondelkäfige, alles grüßte mich wie eine alte Bekanntschaft, ich genoss einen langentbehrten freundlichen Jugendeindruck.
