This is the third novel featuring the Rev Oughterard, vicar of St Botolph's and genteel murderer of parishioner Mrs Elizabeth Fotherington. Il commissario Anna Bellini è invischiata nel caso Roveda più di quanto mai avrebbe pensato. Ora scopre che Rebecca Garrone, il suo referente nei servizi segreti, è stata allontanata, e al suo posto è arrivata una certa Giada Santini. Ora Anna dovrà avere a che fare solo con lei. I metodi di Giada sono molto diversi da quelli di Rebecca. La prima azione estrema che Giada ordina ad Anna è infatti di distruggere l'archivio di Roveda. Ha intenzione di farlo saltare in aria.

L'opera fa parte del progetto "AutoreVole: audiodrammi in teatro" in cui autori di fama nazionale si sono confrontati con la drammaturgia radiofonica. Allestiti in teatro, gli audiodrammi permettono agli spettatori - dotati di radiocuffie - di "vedere la radio". Doveva essere una semplice settimana di lavoro, ma dal viaggio Daria non è più tornata. È stata trovata impiccata nella camera di un albergo scalcinato, suicida senza nemmeno un biglietto d'addio. In cerca di una spiegazione al gesto della moglie, Fabio parte per Amsterdam scoprendo che Daria ha trascorso i suoi ultimi giorni sotto l'effetto di sostanze allucinogene, cercando dentro di sé le risposte che i libri non erano più in grado di darle.

Con Gillo ancora in coma, e l'archivio segreto di Roveda nelle sue mani, Anna Bellini deve continuare a muoversi nel sottobosco della criminalità che ruotava attorno a Roveda e alla sua banda, in cerca di una via d'uscita. Anna, costretta da Maceratini a far uscire di galera Zeller, decide di usare il criminale come esca. Anna segue Zeller in auto e assiste al tentativo di due killer di ucciderlo. Anna interviene, ferisce uno dei killer e salva Zeller. Anna porta il killer al Lovers Hotel e lo interroga.
