Als Rudolf Steiner im Jahre 1904 die Erstausgabe seines Werkes Theosophie präsentierte, war ihm wohl noch nicht klar, dass er ab 1913 diesen Begriff durch den noch heute gültigen Terminus der "Anthroposophie" ersetzen würde. In der Schrift Theosophie, die eine äußerst erfolgreiche Publikation wurde, präsentierte er zum ersten Mal seinen Ansatz, dass die Theosophie eine wissenschaftliche Erforschung der geistigen Welt darstelle, die tatsächlich aus drei Welten bestehe: Seelenwelt, Geisterland und physische Welt.

Prominent Theosophists Annie Besant and C. W. Leadbeater were pioneers in asserting that thoughts are, indeed, things. Originally released in 1901, Thought-Forms is a seminal work on what thoughts “look” like. It had an impact far beyond the circle of its primary audience and greatly influenced leading artists such as Piet Mondrian and Wassily Kandinsky.

Alfred Percy Sinnett was one of the most significant members of the Theosophical Society. In "The Occult World," he gave long extracts from his early correspondence with Mahatma Koot Hoomi, describing the higher mysteries of nature possessed by the Indian "Mahatmas." In addition, he explained in detail many of the occult phenomena that Madame Blavatsky performed while she was in Simla. Listeners will not leave this fantastic work without spiritual growth.

Annie Wood Besant (1847-1933) was a prominent Theosophist, women’s rights activist, writer, and orator. She was born in London into a middle-class family of Irish origin. She fought for the causes she thought were right, starting with freedom of thought, women’s rights, secularism (she was a leading member of the National Secular Society), birth control, Fabian socialism, and workers’ rights. Soon, she was earning a small weekly wage by writing a column for the National Reformer, the newspaper of the National Secular Society. She was also one of the leading figures in Theosophy.
