Den 15 januari 1988 försvinner 47 oersättliga konstverk från Carl Larsson-gården i Sundborn, Dalarna. Detta är en av de största konststölderna i Sveriges historia. De stulna konstverken som är skapade av några av Sveriges mest älskade och kända konstnärer är både ömtåliga och ovärderliga. När nyheten om kuppen nådde allmänheten skapade den stor upprördhet, och satte lokalsamhället i chock. Polisen börjar genast utreda stölden; poliser från hela landet, samt även Interpol, tas in för att utreda brottet.

Karl Olav Pedersen var i 60-års åldern. Han var förtidspensionerad, och fördrev tiden med promenader och biobesök. På väg mot dagens matiné, en westernfilm, såg han en ung man ståendes nära polishuset, med något under jackan. Karl Olav, som trodde att det kunde vara en flaska brännvin, gick fram och frågade om han kunde få en sup. Den unga mannen svarade vresigt att han inte hade något brännvin, och visade Karl Olav den sten han gömde innanför jackan. Den unga mannen hade kommit dit för att ta livet av polisen, meddelande han den förvirrade pensionären.

Pyromanen hade satt skräck i bygden under fler år. Hur ska polisen kunna finna gärningsmannen när bevisen bokstavligt talat går upp i rök? Våren 1987 inkommer ett brev till Sveriges ambassad i London som genast väcker personalens intresse och sympatier. I brevet beskriver ett äldre brittiskt par hur de lurats av en svensk baron, som lovat dem ett arbete som inte existerade i verkligheten. Brevet överlämnas till svensk polis, som åker för att intervjua paret i England. Paret hade kommit i kontakt med baronen, som givit dem arbete på sitt slott i Portugal. De hade blivit lovade en hög lön och ett hem på slottet, och i förberedelse för flytten sålde de sitt hus och sina ägodelar.

I november 1986 fyllde Anton Nilson 99 år. Han deltog 1908 i ett av de mest omtalade politiska attentat som utförts i Sverige. Nämligen sprängningen av skonerten Amalthea i Malmö hamn. Han dömdes samma år till döden, men straffet verkställdes inte. Istället benådades han och efter frigivningen engagerade sig Anton Nilson i den ryska revolutionen. Idag omtalas han som "Sveriges mest kände politiske terrorist". Själv menar han sig dock vara emot alla former av våld och vill inte kännas vid detta epitet. Däremot ångrar han inte attentatet i Malmö.
