French author Jules Verne earned recognition as one of the founders of science-fiction tales. Although, as one of those called “fathers of science fiction”, Verne often said he had not aimed at seeming scientific, claiming, “I have invented nothing." However, he did feel, “Anything one man can imagine, other men can make real.” As one of those “other” men he did exactly that in his marvelous description of Phileas Fogg and his remarkable journey Around the World in Eighty Days, a trip done without any modern transportation.

Im amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg ist es zu einer Seeblockade vor der Küste der Südstaaten gekommen. Die Blockade hat den Handel mit Baumwolle nahezu zum Erliegen gebracht. Der Onkel lässt sich Bedingungen nennen und inwieweit der Neffe diese erfüllen könne (Schiffstyp, Mannschaft, Bewaffnung).

During his twilight years, the French author Jules Verne (1828-1905) wrote two original sequels to books that had fired his own youthful imagination but which he felt to be incomplete: Johann Wyss's Swiss Family Robinson and Edgar Allan Poe's The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket. Arthur Gordon Pym (1845) was only one of many Poe stories which Verne admired; no other single author had more impact on his writing.

Es handelt sich um ein frühes Werk des Science-Fiction-Genres, das die Mondfahrt um fast genau hundert Jahre vorwegnimmt.
