Le récit a pour théâtre l'Amérique du Nord, pendant la guerre de Sept Ans. Les affrontements entre Français et Anglais en forment la toile de fond. La bataille de Fort William Henry oppose, en août 1757 les troupes du général français Montcalm (et de ses alliés indiens) à celles du britannique Munro. Un officier anglais est chargé de conduire 2 jeunes filles, Alice et Cora chez leur père, le général Monro, dans son fort assiégé.

Waldläufer Natty Bumppo, auch "Lederstrumpf" genannt, kann in letzter Sekunde einem Überfall der Irokesen entkommen, doch seine Gefährten geraten in Gefangenschaft. Zusammen mit Chingachgook, dessen geliebte Wah-ta-Wah ebenfalls von den Irokesen entführt wurde, macht er sich auf, die Gefangenen zu befreien.

Als der junge Offizier Heyward die beiden Töchter des Kommandanten ins Fort bringen soll, wir der von dem Waldläufer Natty Bumppo und seinem Freund Chingachgook vor einem Hinterhalt der Indianer gewarnt. So gelangen sie sicher zum Fort, doch dann werden die Mädchen von Indianern entführt. Natty und Chingachgook versuchen sie zu retten.
