En partageant la même chambre, Augustin et François, le fils des Seurel, se lient d'amitié. Le nouveau venu éveille rapidement chez le sensible François une véritable fascination.

A new pupil, Augustin Meaulnes, arrives at a rural school, and his bravado and charisma make an immediate impact on all those around him, including the 15-year-old François Seurel. The newcomer suddenly disappears for several days, during which time he stumbles across a mysterious manor house, which is home to a beautiful girl, Yvonne de Galais. After returning, ‘Le Grand Meaulnes’ embarks on a search to find again the lost manor and the happiness he found there.

Alain-Fournier est un écrivain français, dont l'œuvre la plus célèbre est "Le Grand Meaulnes" (1913). Lieutenant de réserve, mobilisé le 2 août 1914, Alain-Fournier part de Cambo dans le Pays basque, pour rejoindre son régiment, le 288e régiment d'infanterie à Mirande ; il est affecté à la 23e compagnie. Avec sa compagnie, il participe ensuite à plusieurs combats meurtriers autour de Verdun. Alain Fournier a été tué par l'ennemi le 26 septembre, à Vaux (Meuse).

Der Ich-Erzähler ist der jüngere Freund der Hauptfigur Augustin Meaulnes (gesprochen "Mon"). Er berichtet über dessen Schulzeit, Abenteuer und die unerfüllte Liebe zu der schönen und zerbrechlichen Adeligen Yvonne de Galais.
