 The Damned & Other Stories of the Macabre is Skyboat Media’s second original compilation of stories by Algernon Blackwood, featuring six of his most unique and macabre stories that contemplate the true meaning of reality and nature of the making of the world. 

This collection comprises 40 stories by and inspired by the originators of weird fiction. From Blackwood's The Empty House, through to Philip K. Dick's The Hanging Stranger, Lovecraft's Out of The Aeons, and beyond. 

British author Algernon Blackwood was a prolific writer who is usually remembered for his numerous ghost stories; however, he also wrote on many other supernatural themes. This collection of 13 stories includes: "The Wendigo", "The Olive", "The Goblin's Collection", "The Sea Fit", "Ancient Lights", "The Prayer", "The Wood of the Dead", "An Egyptian Hornet", "The Other Wing", "The Singular Death of Morton", "Entrance and Exit", "The Kit Bag", "The Damned".

Perhaps Blackwood's most celebrated story, The Willows was influenced heavily by his own trips down the Danube River. It tells the story of two campers who pick the wrong place to sleep for the night, a place where another dimension impinges on our own. H.P. Lovecraft considered this the finest supernatural tale in English literature.

Days from civilisation five men are about to experience something beyond the rational. In Algernon Blackwood's chilling masterpiece "The Wendigo," a hunting party ventures into the haunting wilderness of the Canadian backwoods. When an ancient Native American legend begins to manifest in reality, the trip takes an unsettling turn. A sinister force, the Wendigo, a creature of unimaginable hunger and insatiable desire for the human spirit, starts stalking them. The wilderness no longer whispers of serenity but screams of untold terror. The line between humanity and primal fear blurs as they grapple with the terrifying unknown, testing their sanity to the breaking point.

Described by H P Lovecraft as 'the one absolute and unquestioned master of weird atmosphere', Algernon Blackwood (CBE) was the acclaimed and prolific author of numerous ghost stories and horror tales. Throughout his lifetime, he wrote 14 novels, several children's books, a number of plays, and over 200 short stories. This anthology opens with a selection of stories featuring his most influential character, occult detective Dr John Silence.

This collection contains a mixture of stories about ghosts and contacts from spirits, some by celebrated authors, together with essays on psychical research. As Joseph French notes in the preface, even for the skeptic, tales of ghostly activity retain a distinct fascination. The widespread interest in psychic phenomena in the early twentieth century proved to be a significant stimulus to literary production.

The author once worked as a dairy farmer in Canada, but returned to his home in Kent, near London, and became a broadcaster, journalist, novelist, and short story writer. He specialized in tales of the supernatural and was described as “Unquestioned master of weird atmosphere,” as he told of incredible adventures. He often used first person narrations, as you will hear … and, very likely feel an abnormal phantom presence. Come along … If you dare!

Blackwood's The Wendigo, a horror novel that follows two campers as they stow away from the distractions of civilization and into a remote hinterland of uninhabited nature, is second in popularity only to The Willows, and the comparison is close. A supernatural force hostile to humans, oozing with cosmic power, and only dimly recognizable via the blind impressions of local mythology, the Outer Being haunts both of the stories.

During a canoe trip on the Danube, two men are forced to stop on an island due to the current. What was supposed to be a peaceful temporary camping experience turns into a disturbing and supernatural ordeal: the willows covering the island seem to move and whisper in the wind, giving the impression of being alive; the presence of hostile and terrifying invisible entities is perceived, casting doubt on every capacity for rational thought.

Algernon Blackwood was a contemporary of Arthur Machen, a member of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn and writer of the weird and supernatural. Originally published in 1906, The Empty House tells the tale of Jim Shorthouse when his aunt shows up in town with keys to the local haunted house and expects him to help her investigate.

In Algernon Blackwood's "The Willows," two friends are swept into a chilling voyage down the River Danube, where the elements seem eerily alive. Algernon Blackwood, a journalist and broadcast narrator, was one of the most prolific writers of ghost stories in the history of the genre. The title story, "The Touch of Pan", explores the lingering presence of myth in everyday life. In "The Glamour of the Snow", Blackwood winds a tale about a man's infatuation with a supernatural winter beauty. In "The Attic", the ghost of an usurer haunts the old Chateaux and, on the anniversary of a young boy's death, the boy's cat brings the family together. "The Willows" follows two campers who are on a canoe trip down the Danube.
