Aus einem Stück Holz schafft der Holzschnitzer Geppetto eine Marionette: Pinocchio. Doch kaum hat er seine Arbeit beendet, stellt Pinocchio nur noch Unfug an. "Mi piacciono i toscanismi della lingua di Collodi, adoro la sua voce e le voci dei suoi personaggi, che io provavo ad accennare quando leggevo il racconto ai figlioli prima di addormentarli. Le sue pagine sembrano fatte apposta per la lettura ad alta voce. La voce di Collodi è aspra, concreta, esatta, abrasiva. Ha una musica stupenda, ruvida, e a volte può essere languida e dolcissima, ma sempre accompagnata da un sorrisetto di beffa. Collodi vuole bene ai suoi personaggi, al suo protagonista, ma allo stesso tempo li prende in giro, li sfotte, li avvolge in una luce ironica"
