In 1942 meldde de Joodse arts Eddy de Wind zich vrijwillig aan als arts om in Westerbork te werken, in de veronderstelling dat hierdoor zijn moeder uit het kamp zou worden vrijgelaten. Bij aankomst bleek zijn moeder echter al op transport gezet naar Auschwitz.

Sul finire del 1944 i tedeschi stanno abbandonando Auschwitz, mentre l'Armata Rossa si avvicina. Portano con sé gran parte dei prigionieri rimasti, forzandoli in estenuanti marce verso i lager della Germania. Per sfuggire a quel destino, Eddy de Wind si nasconde in una delle baracche, sotto un cumulo di vestiti; Friedel, sua moglie, non ha il coraggio di imitarlo. Di lì a qualche giorno Eddy trova un taccuino abbandonato e comincia a scrivere la sua storia. Lui e Friedel si sono conosciuti nel campo di transito di Westerbork, nei Paesi Bassi.
