It began in a women's club in London on a February afternoon. He is a magnificent young man with flame-coloured hair. She is the sweetest little thing in a hat. There is just one complication: Christopher is 25, while Catherine is just a little bit older. Flattered by the passionate attentions of youth, Catherine, with marriage and motherhood behind her, is at first circumspect, but finally succumbs to her lover's charms.

Elizabeth von Arnim, who is best known for her later novel The Enchanted April, married a Prussian aristocrat and, with their five children, lived in Nassenheide, Pomerania. Elizabeth and Her German Garden is a semi-autobiographical novel about the joy that the protagonist finds in the delights of her Pomeranian garden, which provides relief from the stifling environment of her household. The novel was originally published anonymously because von Arnim feared that her husband, whom she satirised in the book, would disapprove.

Since her mother's death, Jennifer has devoted years of her life to her father, managing the family home. After the sudden announcement that he has taken a new wife, Jennifer, at 33, seizes the opportunity to lead an independent life. Quickly she secures the lease of Rose Cottage and turns her attention to her own interests. While Jennifer is desperate to experience life on her own terms within her reduced financial means, her neighbour, Alice, is pre-occupied with ensuring her position as head of her brother's household is never challenged.

Sally, "imprigionata nella sua bellezza", un povero angelo catapultato dal suo mondo di pochi pensieri e di linguaggio sgrammaticato e rudimentale in un modo sconosciuto di cui non conosce parole o comportamenti, e in cui tutti non fanno che fissarla, corteggiarla, desiderarla. Ma la cosa non preoccupa lei, sempre pronta a sorridere e a compiacere, diventa solo una maledizione per chi decide di possederla.

In un club della Londra anni Venti due signore inglesi scoprono di essere accomunate da una vita amorosa insoddisfacente, molto diversa da quella che avevano sognato il giorno del matrimonio. Mrs Wilkins, timida e repressa, è sposata con un avvocato ambizioso che "lodava la parsimonia tranne quando si trattava del cibo che finiva nel suo piatto"; Mrs Arbuthnot, estremamente religiosa, è sposata a uno scrittore di biografie sulle amanti dei re: per una donna come lei, una cosa davvero sconveniente.

L'autrice, riscoperta recentemente dalla letteratura di genere, non ha mai pubblicato, in vita, questo romanzo, che fu scoperto dall'editore fra le sue carte e pubblicato integralmente (anche se mancava il capitolo IV, del quale peraltro non si sente la mancanza). Perché il romanzo, che risale al 1901, non sia mai stato pubblicato dall'autrice, è ignoto: certamente il fatto che la protagonista si chiami Elizabeth, come in diverse altre sue opere, fa pensare a una certa ispirazione autobiografica, che può essere la causa della sua non pubblicazione.
