Island of the Blue Dolphins is the remarkable story of a strange and beautiful Indian girl who lives a serene and courageous life as the solitary survivor on an island off the California coast. Left behind when the rest of her tribe fled, she waits, year after year, for a ship to come for her. She fights for her very survival, building a shelter, hunting for food, and making weapons to stave off her enemies, the wild dogs who took her brother.

Karana, a Ghalas-at Indian, lives peacefully on the island with her tribe until the arrival of a Russian otter-hunting ship. In spite of the deal the Aleutian hunters make with her father, the Ghalas-at chief, in the end they prove treacherous, killing most of the tribe. Karana's younger brother, Ramo, is all that is left of her family. Fearful of the Aleuts' return, the remaining Indians decide to move to another island, and are offered safe passage by some friendly ships. But as Karana boards the ship to leave the island forever, she is unable to find Ramo.

Die Insel, auf der das Mädchen Won-a-pa-lei lebt, sieht aus wie ein auf der Seite liegender Delfin. Seitdem ihr Stamm sie nach einem Überfall fremder Jäger hier zurückgelassen hat, ist Won-a-pa-lei die einzige Bewohnerin dieses Fleckchens Erde mitten im Pazifik. Ganz auf sich allein gestellt, baut sie sich eine Hütte, erbeutet Nahrung und schafft es, die Insel zu ihrem Zuhause werden zu lassen. Doch der Kampf ums Überleben ist hart: Sturmfluten, Erdbeben und Angriffe wilder Tiere fordern sie jeden Tag aufs Neue heraus.
