Als der Psychologe Kris Kelvin auf einer Forschungsstation auf dem Planeten Solaris eintrifft, findet er eine demoralisierte und psychisch labile Mannschaft vor. Das Raumschiff Kondor ist vor 8 Monaten in der Wüste gestrandet. Es wird von der Besatzung des Schiffes Der Unbesiegbare unversehrt, jedoch mit ca. 100 Mann verstorbener Besatzung, vorgefunden. Einer der Crew wird mit gut erhaltenen Organen in einem Kühlraum entdeckt. Mithilfe moderner Technik können die letzten Gehirnaktivitäten des Eingefrorenen abgehört werden.
