Fourth story in a collection of interlinked tales of crime and retribution laced with dark humour, set around the festive season. Working in a call centre normally offers few career opportunities. But it looks as if Tracy’s about to get her big break.

Eigentlich sollte man belohnt werden, wenn man einen Psychopathen fasst und dessen Opfer rettet. Allerdings nur, wenn man dabei alle Regeln befolgt. Logan McRae, stellvertretender Detective Inspector, erhält also statt einer Beförderung eine „berufliche Entwicklungschance“ in einem kleinen Küstenort nördlich von Aberdeen. Psychopathen scheint es dort nicht zu geben, dafür Drogendealer, Ladendiebe und entlaufenes Vieh. Und einige Vermisstenfälle. Da es sich bei den Verschwundenen jedoch um erwachsene Männer handelt, wird der Sache keine größere Bedeutung zugemessen.

Der erste Tote wird mit einem brennenden Reifen um den Hals gefunden, es gibt außerdem Anzeichen einer Strangulierung sowie diverse Stichwunden. Zur gleichen Zeit hinterlässt jemand kleine Knochenbündel vor Detective Inspector Logan McRaes Tür, die dieser jedoch ignoriert. Als eine weitere Leiche gefunden wird, zeigt sich eine Verbindung zwischen den Morden und der Handlung eines Bestsellers um Hexen und Hexenjäger, der gerade in Aberdeen verfilmt wird. Und plötzlich erweisen sich auch die Knochenbündel als weit weniger harmlos, als McRae dachte.
