Description
The man on the moon was dead. They called him Charlie. He had big eyes, abundant body hair, and fairly long nostrils. His skeletal body was found clad in a bright red spacesuit, hidden in a rocky grave. They didn’t know who he was, how he got there, or what had killed him. All they knew was that his corpse was 50 thousand years old - and that meant this man had somehow lived long before he ever could have existed.

Don’t give up
I found the beginning of the book slow and monotonous, and the reader’s monotone delivery exaggerated the problem. I was ready to give up, and rate this 2 stars, but I kept going.
In the end it’s a very good story and well told, but it’s laden with a lot of detailed pseudo science, and the flat performance makes these parts of the book dull for me.
The book was written in the early 1970’s when technology was very primitive, and this shows in the writing. The descriptions of computer processing might have seemed futuristic in 1972, but today it feels slightly ridiculous, so you will need to cut it some slack on this front if you want to enjoy the book.

interesting
Man.....that is some dry, hard sci-fi. It's more like a textbook than a story. we literally just follow the investigation of an amazing scientific discovery. The characters do not matter, they are merely there to tells us what's going on. This might sound like a negative review but I enjoyed this book and will listen to book 2.

A spectacular ending to an amazing story
Loved the story, you can tell it a bit dated what with references to Soviets and all, bit what a great story line and what an amazing ending, neatly encompassing the whole plot and bringing it to a satisfactory end. I almost had tears in my eyes when it finished. A must read/listen .

Was this narrated by a robot?
The emotionless attention to enunciation is pretty annoying. Hard to enjoy the story when your listening to the equivalent of a "learn to read English" computer program from the 90s

A good story
I enjoyed the slow and methodical nature of this book. You can tell by the constant talk of smoking and the lack of female characters that this was an old story but the story itself has aged quite well.

best sci-fi book ever! mysteries within mysteries
I've read this book multiple times, but this was the first time as an audio book. The story is fantastic if you like scientific mysteries. I think it is easier to listen to the science than to read it. This is my first audio novel. I liked the narration but found the character voices distracting, especially the accents that come and go. Just a note for the modern reader: this book was published in 1977. Although the science holds up amazingly well (Although a real scientist might disagree) there is a 70s mindset baked in... particularly in the total lack of female characters in meaningful roles and smoking in inappropriate locations. It is a bit distracting and you have to look past it to see a credible vision of 2130.

Scientific Mystery
Amazing book, follows the story of scientists trying to figure out what happened in history when they find something on the moon. Each chapter reveals a new piece of the puzzle or throws away an older piece in favour of a new one. Will be reading the second book in the series. Only 4 stars for performance because this book uses a single narrator, where others may use multiple for different characters.

Good Old SF
Really enjoyed this one. My first Hogan. A little slow in the middle, and he burried the lead for a long time. Pay of was good though. Definitely worth the listen, and you can beat the price.
