Description

After a life of passion and adventure that has brought her through slavery to the Resurrection garden, through the controversies of the early Church to a hermit cave in southern Gaul, Maeve, the Celtic Mary Magdalen, returns to the Holy Isles accompanied by Sarah, her daughter with Jesus. Their mission: to find Maeve's firstborn child, stolen from her by the druids more than 40 years ago. Since then Maeve's homeland has suffered its own trials - Roman invasion and occupation. The Celtic tribes to the east and south are under direct rule, and the Romans are determined to rout the resistance of the western tribes, resistance fueled by the druids of Mona. Just before she crosses the channel from Gaul to Britain, Maeve encounters a man she mistakes for Jesus' ghost. This familiar stranger is equally haunted, and the two are drawn into a moonstruck liaison that will entwine their lives in "an impossible Celtic knot". For, unbeknownst to Maeve at the time, he is none other than General Gaius Suetonius Paulinus, the newly appointed Roman governor of Britain. Maeve keeps this troubling tryst a secret even after she finds her long-lost daughter, Boudica, the fierce and charismatic queen of the Iceni tribe. Druid-trained in her youth, Boudica married the Iceni king, hoping to rally him to a rebellion for which he has no stomach. Now estranged from her husband, Boudica keeps the old ways, sustained by her pride in her descent from her father (and Maeve's!): the late, great druid Lovernios. Seeking to circumvent disaster, Maeve travels back and forth from Iceni country to Mona, from the heart of native resistance to a Roman fort on the western front, steadfast in her conviction: "Love is as strong as death".

Absolutely incredible

This is the 4th book in the series. It’s moving, and incredibly complex. Devastatingly beautiful.

Awed and Inspired

So I’ll start with some context,

I love audiobooks but usually use them for non-fiction personal development type content. I’ve listened to a couple other novels, the Celestine Prophecy, the Gaia Codex, and The Alchemist. Really, I consider those to be personal development type fiction.

I’ve read the rest of the series and I LOVED it. Truly. However sometimes my brain makes processing challenging when reading, and because I wanted to finish the story,
I used my credit to get the audiobook for Red-Robed Priestess.

This is the first novel I’ve listened to that actually feels like a novel. The story is beautiful and riveting and expanding. It has expanded my mind and spirit in such unexpected but wonderful ways.

Elizabeth Cunningham created a world and story that is almost unmatched for me.

Romance, without the romance being the story or the driving factor of the lead.
Well-written women, who even when they are more than ‘normal’ humans are so beautifully imperfect and dynamic.
A strong woman protagonist, who’s strength is not rooted in abandoning or rejecting femininity, but rather embracing it.
(Though she does carry both masculine and feminine energy within her. She wasn’t forced into either side of the supposed binary.)

Heather O’Neill brought the story to life in a way that I didn’t think was possible in an audiobook. The pacing, pronunciation, accents, rhythm, tone…. Beautiful and captivating.

Between Elizabeth Cunningham’s story, and Heather O’Neill’s telling of the story, I found myself entranced, even when my mind would normally wander. I have been able to work on housework without losing the thread of the story, and I have been able to sit and stare at the moon without my mind meandering away from the story.

I don’t know what to say except,
Thank you.

To anyone who isn’t sure, give it a chance.
You may find you’re as pleasantly surprised as I was. I’m almost certain you won’t regret it.

Love ❤️

Captivating

A story to transcend time. The writing, poetry in prose with a performance so real you are walking in the steps of the each character, seeing and feeling each event unfold.

For those who sense the connection between the Celtic Holy Isles of Britannia and Jesus, Mother Mary and Mary of Magdala, true mystics, this is a must read.
