Description

The Naration Killed It For Me
The book was OK. I struggled with the sing song throw back naration which just threw me off. it made it so hard to follow the story line.

Worth getting past the Reader
The story was excellent and drew me in easily. The reader was overacting and generally could have ruined the story if I wasn’t able to get past this. I also found his stereotyping all black characters “hood talk” disgraceful. If not visually impaired read the book!

Enjoyable Mystery-Thriller
Gregg Hurwitz offers a well-planned and well-written tale about a Hollywood writer ('Andrew Danner') who wakes up after brain surgery unable to remember if he had committed the murder for which he was convicted. He then goes on a mission to discover what really happened and prove or disprove his innocence.
On the Plus side of the Pro/Con ledger, the plotting and pacing are excellent, Hurwitz's description skills are impressive, and the author is a genuine wordsmith - carefully fashioning his vocabulary & prose to provide emotive imagery and allegory.
Less fortunately, he freely makes use of stereotypes and tropes (blacks are cartoonish; youth are invariably gangbanger street thugs; etc), and the "Amnesia" plot device is employed effectively but feels both tired/overused and implausible. I'm not a fan of the "Why can't I remember?" contention.
Blackstone Audio Inc. don't help the situation, either. Reader Scott Brick is typically professional (with regards to diction, timbre, and tone) - but overperforms the ebonics-heavy dialogue and can't resist slipping into a sing-song Iambic cadence. Setting playback speed at 1.15X softens some of the deficiencies - but the producers could have cast this project better. This isn't Mr. Brick's best work.
Altogether, 'The Crime Writer' merits 7.5 stars out of 10. As a 'Plus' option, it was a pleasant way to while away a couple of quiet afternoons, but you should spend your Credit elsewhere should they ask for one.

Fantastic!
Great story and narration. The performance is brilliant in bringing the humour and seriousness of the crime to the head of the story. This is a first time listen of Hurwitz, and I quickly looked up other titles.

Enjoyed narration and twists
I actually enjoyed listening to the narrator and the different character voices. The story dragged a bit in some parts but overall I liked the plot and there second half is much better.
