Description
From the internationally best-selling author, a twisted, multi-layered, mind-bending spin on the classic horror novel
In the wake of his parents’ tragic deaths in a house fire, fourteen-year-old Richard has been sent to live with his aunt and uncle in the remote, insular town of Ballantyne, where he quickly earns a reputation as an outcast. When a classmate named Tom goes missing, everyone suspects that the angry new boy is responsible for his disappearance. And no one believes Richard when he says the telephone booth out by the edge of the woods sucked Tom into the receiver like something out of a horror movie. No one, that is, except Karen, a beguiling fellow outsider who encourages Richard to pursue clues the police refuse to investigate. He eventually traces the number that Tom prank-called from the phone booth to an abandoned house in the Black Mirror Wood. There he catches a glimpse of a terrifying face in the window. And then the voices begin to whisper in his ear: You know who I am. She’s going to burn. The one you love is going to burn. There’s not a thing you can do about it.
When another classmate disappears, Richard must find a way to prove his innocence—and preserve his sanity—as he grapples with the dark magic that is possessing Ballantyne and threatening to destroy him.
Then again, Richard may not be the most reliable narrator of his own story . . .
Ce que les critiques en disent
"Nesbø doesn’t spend any time fiddling about, building up, or misdirecting. In The Night House, the horror begins immediately. And it only keeps calling from there. There are lessons to be learned here: who to believe and what to believe in. And how a person can change, when the impossible turns possible and the unimaginable is laid bare. This horror fan loved it." (Josh Malerman, New York Times best-selling author of Bird Box and Spin a Black Yarn)

The ending feels like a total cop out
This story started out strong, had a really interesting premise and while it meandered away into a subplot for a while, was building a world where magic and curses were real, and seemed to position the main character to fight the central villain.
Then the story abruptly shifted. It was just a story the main character (now an author) wrote in one of his books! Or was it? Not the direction you think it's going in but you're still along for the ride.
BUT THEN! Part three. Part three wraps things up in the least satisfying way possible. I won't spoil the ending, maybe you'll enjoy it. I hated it.
The performance was fine, he isn't my favorite reader but serviceable. The translation is alright although I did sometimes forget the novel was set in Norway as they changed some references to be more "American".
If the rest of his books are like this I think I will skip anything else by Mr. Nesbo.
