Hawking takes us on a fascinating journey through the telescopic lens of modern physics to gain a new glimpse of the universe--the nature of black holes, the space-time continuum, and new information about the origin of the universe. He uses this scientific basis to come up with a "unified theory of everything" that the author claims will be "the ultimate triumph of human reason."

In a rare blend of scientific insight and writing as elegant as the theories it explains, Brian Greene, one of the world's leading string theorists, peels away the layers of mystery surrounding string theory to reveal a universe that consists of 11 dimensions where the fabric of space tears and repairs itself, and all matter-from the smallest quarks to the most gargantuan supernovas-is generated by the vibrations of microscopically tiny loops of energy.

This landmark book is for those of us who prefer words to equations; this is the story of the ultimate quest for knowledge, the ongoing search for the secrets at the heart of time and space. Its author, Stephen W. Hawking, is arguably the greatest mind since Einstein. From the vantage point of the wheelchair, where he has spent the last 20 years trapped by Lou Gehrig's disease, Professor Hawking has transformed our view of the universe. A Brief History of Time is Hawking's classic introduction to today's most important scientific ideas.

Description
Explore the laws and theories of physics in this accessible introduction to the forces that shape our universe, our planet, and our everyday lives.
Using a bold approach, The Physics Book sets out more than 80 key concepts and discoveries that have defined the subject and influenced our technology since the beginning of time. With the focus firmly on unpicking the thought behind each theory—as well as exploring when and how each idea and breakthrough came about—seven themed chapters examine the history and developments in areas such as energy and matter, and electricity and magnetism, as well as quantum, nuclear, and particle physics.
Eureka moments abound: from Pythagoras's observations of the pleasing harmonies created by vibrating strings, and Galileo's experiments with spheres, to Isaac Newton's apple and his conclusions about gravity and the laws of motion. You'll also learn about Albert Einstein's insights into relativity; how the accidental discovery of cosmic microwave background radiation confirmed the Big Bang theory; the search for the Higgs boson particle; and why most of our Universe is missing.
If you've ever wondered exactly how physicists formulated—and proved—these abstract concepts, The Physics Book is the book for you.

Food for the intellectual-mind
Point form, interesting, informative and well read. This is an inspiring read that doesn’t waste time on the political maneuvering of the subjects but rather digs deep into the heart of the point raised, very well done.

More a history book about physics than explanation
While the book itself is somehow interesting at first I realized quickly that nothing is very "simply explained" if explained at all.
It's a history book, with key figures in physics, their realizations and dates.
For some reasons the author think that in a "simply explained" book its a good idea to read mathematical formula... I could not care less about epsilon delta something elevated to the square root of what ever.
I want to learn complex concept with simple examples and this book does not provide this even though the title explicitly says "simply explained" it's simply not explained...
