not too sure about performance.

performance was choppy, not sure if the writing or directing was the cause. 1.15x helps a lot! but all in all it was a great story!

Just “ok”

Clean story. Was refreshing to have the main male character get thrown into adventures with a woman but not have anything romantic result. The first book did spend too much time with the main character protesting about how he’ll never cheat on his wife though.

The story and progression seemed too templated. Too structured to be believable for a “real” world or even well developed game. If i wasn’t a fan of the game lit style progressions I probably would have gotten bored and stopped listening.

Narrator improved with each book. First book felt stilted, like the narator tried finishing sentences before the author. But it was well done by the end. I won’t call him one of the great narrators but certainly someone who I’ll keep an eye on for other books as a safe choice.

Overall it was good clean fun. With a wholesome ending. It just didn’t pull me into the world as much as I’m used to.

A different take on a fantasy novel that doesn’t quite work

In a word: m’eh.

The story had a neat little way to do the “bring someone from our world into a fantasy realm” concept, but it didn’t stick the landing. The writing is definitely geared to young adult - perhaps very young adult - but nowhere near of quality like the Harry Potter series, or Narnia, or even Twilight.

The writing was, at times, overly dramatic and often formulaic. The various “surprises” that the story revealed could be seen coming from several miles away.

The voice performance was also a touch wooden. Not amateur, but there are many (*many*) other voice actors that would have delivered a much more believable performance.
