Story
When Mark Lanegan first arrived in Seattle in the mid-1980s, he was just "an arrogant, self-loathing redneck waster seeking transformation through rock 'n' roll." Little did he know that within less than a decade, he would rise to fame as the frontman of the Screaming Trees, and then fall from grace as a low-level crack dealer and a homeless heroin addict, all the while watching some of his closest friends rocket to the forefront of popular music.

Story
James Hetfield, with whom many years ago Mustaine founded a band known as Metallica, once observed, with some incredulity, that Mustaine must have been born with a horseshoe up his ass. That's how lucky he's been, how fortunate he is to be pulling breath after so many close calls. And Hetfield is right. Mustaine has been lucky. He has been blessed. But here's the thing about having a horseshoe lodged in your rectum: It also hurts like hell. And you never forget it's there.

Pioneers of Britain's nascent rock and metal scene back in the late 1970s, Iron Maiden smashed its way to the top, thanks in no small part to the high-octane performances, operatic singing style, and stage presence of its second but twice-longest-serving lead singer, Bruce Dickinson. As Iron Maiden's front man - first from 1981 to 1993 and then from 1999 to the present - Dickinson has been, and remains, a man of legend.

The nearly five-decade saga of Aerosmith is epic, at once a study in brotherhood and solitude that plays out on the killing fields of rock and roll.

In 1984, at the age of 20, Duff McKagan left his native Seattle - partly to pursue music, but mainly to get away from a host of heroin overdoses then-decimating his closest group of friends in the local punk scene. In LA only a few weeks and still living in his car, he answered a want ad for a bass player placed by someone who identified himself only as "Slash." Soon after, the most dangerous band in the world was born. Guns N' Roses went on to sell more than 100 million albums worldwide.

With input from people who knew and worked with him - together with Cornell's own words - the book recounts in great detail the rise of his immortal band Soundgarden as they emerged from the 1980s post-punk underground to dominate popular culture in the '90s alongside other Seattle bands like Pearl Jam.

When this best-selling autobiography was originally released, everyone was shocked: The Long Hard Road Out of Hell was the darkest, funniest, most controversial and best-selling rock book of its time - and it became the template, both visually and narratively, for almost every rock book since. Marilyn Manson is not just a music icon, it turned out, but one of the best storytellers of his generation.

As lead singer and songwriter for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anthony Kiedis has lived life on the razor's edge. Much has been written about him, but until now we've only had his songs as clues to his experience from the inside. In Scar Tissue, Kiedis proves himself to be as compelling a memoirist as he is a lyricist, giving us a searingly honest account of the life from which his music has evolved.

Publisher's Summary
Alice in Chains was the first of grunge's big four - ahead of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden - to get a gold record and achieve national recognition. With the charismatic Layne Staley behind the microphone, they became one of the most influential and successful bands to come out of the Seattle music scene. But as the band got bigger, so did its problems. Acclaimed journalist David de Sola follows the members from their inauspicious beginnings at a warehouse under the Ballard Bridge through the history of the band, charting:
The local hair metal scene in Seattle during the 1980s.
How drugs nearly destroyed the band and claimed the lives of Staley and founding bassist Mike Starr.
Jerry Cantrell's solo career and Mike Starr's life after being fired from the band.
The band's resurrection with William DuVall, the Atlanta singer/guitarist who stepped into Layne Staley's shoes.
Based on a wealth of interviews with people with direct knowledge of the band and its history, many of whom are speaking on the record for the first time, Alice in Chains will stand as the definitive Alice in Chains biography for years to come.

Decent book on AIC but centred on Layne and heroin.
This book was well researched and read however at least half the book dealt with heroin and its massive impact on the band and Seattle music scene. It would have been nice to learn more about Jerry and stories around the creation of the music.

Better Title: 'The Layne Staley Story'
This is a decent attempt at a biography - considering it's being written by a Graduate Journalism student without the cooperation of band members or Layne Staley's family. David de Sola relies heavily on previously published exposés and interviews with peripheral figures (former teachers, highschool acquaintances, old girlfriends, and assorted hangers-on - A&R people, video directors, roadies, etc) for his exploration of a fascinating band. Despite those drawbacks, however, de Sola puts together a nicely-planned and nicely-executed chronicle of how Alice in Chains was formed, signed, promoted, managed, and eventually reformed. Less fortunately, it includes a ton of focus on iterations of the band through high school and 'Battle Of The Bands' competitions/side projects and contains only passing information on Sean Kinney, Mike Starr, Mike Inez, or even central band founder Jerry Cantrell. It feels somewhat incomplete from that perspective. This book is really about the maturing of Staley into an iconic frontman, his baffling disappearance from the public eye in 1996, his descent into a drug-addiction hell, and a tragic, obscure, lonely death in 2002.
Sebastian York turns in a professional - if unspectacular - reading performance on this audiobook project. His diction is clear, his tone is commendable, and his timbre is notable. His pacing is slightly off, but corrected by increasing playback speed to 1.10X. I would listen to York again.
I bought this book when it was offered as a Daily Deal and it was easily worth my $4.95. But I would spend a credit if I were a big fan of Layne Staley (and hungry for every conceivable tidbit I could find on AiC).
Despite drawbacks, I rate this biographical effort a solid 7.5 stars out of 10. Perhaps someday band members and involved family will be more comfortable discussing the ups and downs of this pivotal 'Seattle Sound' band, but for now this book focussing on Layne Staley is the best compilation of information available.. it's worth your Credit.
