The Galactic Consensus arrived on ships as large as skyscrapers, crafted from glittering alloys that no human scientist could even begin to understand. They followed the trail of century-old television transmissions to welcome us into the galactic community...only to recoil in horror at what they found. They concluded that humans were unfit to be trusted with the advanced technologies that member-states of the Consensus freely traded with each other.

Story
Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th-century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trades she uses to get by - palm readings, zars, and a mysterious gift for healing - are all tricks, both the means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles and a reliable way to survive. But when Nahri accidentally summons Dara, an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior, to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to reconsider her beliefs.

Publisher's Summary
From the New York Times and internationally best-selling authors of the Illuminae Files comes a new science fiction epic....
The year is 2380, and the graduating cadets of Aurora Academy are being assigned their first missions. Star pupil Tyler Jones is ready to recruit the squad of his dreams, but his own boneheaded heroism sees him stuck with the dregs nobody else in the academy would touch....
A cocky diplomat with a black belt in sarcasm
A sociopath scientist with a fondness for shooting her bunkmates
A smart-ass tech whiz with the galaxy's biggest chip on his shoulder
An alien warrior with anger-management issues
A tomboy pilot who's totally not into him, in case you were wondering
And Ty's squad isn't even his biggest problem - that'd be Aurora Jie-Lin O'Malley, the girl he's just rescued from interdimensional space.
Trapped in cryo-sleep for two centuries, Auri is a girl out of time and out of her depth. But she could be the catalyst that starts a war millions of years in the making, and Tyler's squad of losers, discipline cases, and misfits might just be the last hope for the entire galaxy.
NOBODY PANIC.

What the critics say
"This intergalactic space opera has it all: action, thrills, suspense, laughs, and all the feels." (Kirkus Reviews, starred review)
"Rotating perspectives and never-flagging energy propel this narrative forward, which, if it wasn't compelling enough on its own, is given illustrious life by its ragtag, always-at-odds cast." (Booklist, starred review)

fantastic book. a must read
i absolutely loved this book. everything about this was engaging. From the story telling to the narration it was hard to put down. the cast put alot of emotion to their performances. i thought the idea of telling the story from different point of views was brilliant. I am looking forward to the next book and the path it will take.

May 2020 cant come soon enough!
This audiobook was amazing! I had found the physical book in a library but since we were out of town I couldn't borrow it. I found it on Audible and I think this is the fastest I've finished an audiobook.
Great story and now I'm sad because I have to wait until May of next year to get the next book!
Definitely worth the listen though if you have little patience I would suggest waiting to read/listen until April 2020.

most amazing experience I've ever had
I'm usually the person who burns through a paper book in one day but i never really got into audio books until this one. the characters are beautifully brought to life by the eight wonderful voice actresss and actors. even the computer voice seems to have depth lol. I wish I could have sat and listened to the whole thing in one go as it teleported me to a new world. the wait for the next one is going to be brutal but I can't wait to hear what they get up to next. all the laughs, terror , love, and tears will stay with me forever 😁
