Excellent!
A really well crafted story that had me on the edge of my seat throughout! The character development was well thought out and nuanced. Even when characters made bad decisions, it was possible to see why they did what they did. I look forward to listening to more books by this author.

Lots of gratuitous emotion
Good story premise. Way too much filler that overly explains what is readily apparent. Eg "I will do anything for my kids" said about 100 times. Got it the first time and really didn't need to be said in the first place.

Mass produced mystery
This felt just like books I read as a teen, it was not at all surprising to find out Rachel Caine was primarily a YA author. If you’re someone who’s drawn to the words “strong female lead” or if you can read a book in one night then this is for you. It wasn’t bad but it wasn’t worth the time I spent with it. Won’t be following up with the series.

Bad reading or bad sound editing?
Loved the story! Kept me interested right to the end. The narrator sound like it was read more from some artificial intelligence or text to speech software. It was a tone that would be hard to do so I suspect it may be just some bad sound editing. The other bad thing was it was written in first person so it was never very clear what was being spoken and what was being thought.
But overall, I found it a very good listen and I look forward to listening to the next novel. Hopefully the narration will be better.
