Publisher's Summary
In his wickedly brilliant first novel, Debut Dagger Award winner Alan Bradley introduces one of the most singular and engaging heroines in recent fiction: Eleven-year-old Flavia de Luce, an aspiring chemist with a passion for poison.
It is the summer of 1950 - and a series of inexplicable events has struck Buckshaw, the decaying English mansion that Flavia’s family calls home. A dead bird is found on the doorstep, a postage stamp bizarrely pinned to its beak. Hours later, Flavia finds a man lying in the cucumber patch and watches him as he takes his dying breath. For Flavia, who is both appalled and delighted, life begins in earnest when murder comes to Buckshaw. “I wish I could say I was afraid, but I wasn’t. Quite the contrary. This was by far the most interesting thing that had ever happened to me in my entire life".
To Flavia the investigation is the stuff of science: Full of possibilities, contradictions, and connections. Soon her father, a man raising his three daughters alone, is seized, accused of murder. And in a police cell, during a violent thunderstorm, Colonel de Luce tells his daughter an astounding story - of a schoolboy friendship turned ugly, of a priceless object that vanished in a bizarre and brazen act of thievery, of a Latin teacher who flung himself to his death from the school’s tower 30 years before. Now Flavia is armed with more than enough knowledge to tie two distant deaths together, to examine new suspects, and begin a search that will lead her all the way to the King of England himself. Of this much the girl is sure: Her father is innocent of murder - but protecting her and her sisters from something even worse...
An enthralling mystery, a piercing depiction of class and society, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie is a masterfully told tale of deceptions - and a rich literary delight.
What the critics say
"Brilliant, irresistible and incorrigible, Flavia has a long future ahead of her...Bradley's mystery debut is a standout." (Kirkus Reviews)
"Fun for the reader.... Fans of Louise Fitzhugh's iconic Harriet the Spy will welcome 11-year-old sleuth Flavia de Luce, the heroine of...Bradley's rollicking debut." (Publishers Weekly)
"While Flavia De Luce is winning your heart, she may also be poisoning your tea. She's the most wickedly funny sleuth in years, brilliant, unpredictable, unflappable - and only eleven. The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie offers the freshest new voice in mystery yet." (Charles Todd, author of The Ian Rutledge series)

It's time to curl up with a cozy mystery! Or, since we're talking audiobooks, it may be time to (cracking knuckles) get some chores done while we listen to one of the most pleasurable genres around. These are my top eight cozy mystery authors, whose series I always enjoy and always prefer to experience in audio. Very enjoyable
I found it very enjoyable both the story and performance. I liked the way the story unraveled. And loved that it was told with British flair.

A fun listen, but the yellow face is cringe
As a fun, British style border mystery, this is a great story! the protagonist is cute and the whole thing is very enjoyable. That said, there is an extended reenactment of a magic trick with "The Mandarin" which is really hard to listen to. 1920s casual racism me damned, it's awkward to hear.

loved it.
My kids and I loved this book. We listened to it while we did puzzles. My teenagers loved the chemistry references and got excited hearing school subjects told in a fun and engaging way.
The story is fresh and engaging and comes together in a way that makes you root for Flavia.

Unbelievable child genius or author’s self-aggrandizing portrayal
It took me a while to decide to read the audio, given the previous reviews, but I enjoyed the book version I began reading (but couldn’t fully engage) and was facing a long journey requiring audio to complete.
The characters have enough richness to have a flavour of their personalities. Flavia is endearing, perhaps it is the audio narrator’s etch in her voice, but she rendered the character a bit coy in her cunning mind.
Flavia’s quick wittedness and above average mind throughout the ‘case’ are problematic enough I would choose not to read another case that she would mastermind. Some rich language…just needs a wee bit more plausibility. Perhaps a savant scientist and child duo in the English countryside would have been more feasible)? The savant scientist would have been a child at some point, but wouldn’t have the dynamic energy of this particular character. The ending also dragged a bit to tie up all the loose ends. A bit too complicated (rather than complex) to be intriguing for my liking.

Superb on every level
Wonderful, tight writing and a delicious reading by Jayne Entwistle. She perfectly embodies the gleeful precociousness of 11-year-old Flavia. Bradley provides wonderful dialogue and observation while keeping the plot taut and moving. An absolute pleasure to listen to. A treasure of a series!

First of the series
Around half the book, I felt like just letting it go. I thought it was full of useless details and I could not see where it was going. I had already decided I would never read the second book in the series. But the narrator was very good, and at some point I realized the author was Canadian! I could not let the book go once I knew this. The second half of the book was much better (for me). I started getting into it as I tried to remind myself of what it felt like, being an eleven year-old and reading mystery books. Then I started liking Flavia quite a bit. Now I think I just might, some day, read the second book!

Quit listening it was so terrible.
The young protagonist wasn’t even close to believable in intelligence, maturity, or language. Clearly this was written by a man, as no 11 year old child is actually remarking on the size of another’s breasts at first glance. It gave an ick factor that I couldn’t recover from. The reader was also a woman with a grating and high pitched voice. Her terrible accents to the point of being challenging to understand, but also whiny and high pitched does not equal a child-like voice. The book drug on and by chapter 17 I actually stopped reading this. I really wouldn’t pay for this and definitely wouldn’t recommend it for kids.
