FINALIST: The Audie Awards 2016
Audible Originals brings you a brand new audiobook adaptation of J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s classic gothic novella, Carmilla - starring Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey), David Tennant (Doctor Who and Broadchurch) and Phoebe Fox (Life in Squares and The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death).
One of the very first vampire thrillers, this audio adaptation follows 18-year-old Laura as she recounts the story of her mysterious, intriguing and beautiful house guest Carmilla, who is stranded in the forest after a carriage accident and taken in by Laura’s widowed father. The girls develop a friendship which turns into a passionate meeting of souls. A relationship of vampire and prey, the story is told through Laura’s eyes as she is drawn further into Carmilla’s terrifying world of pleasure and pain.
A masterpiece of erotic Gothic horror, Carmilla encompasses mystery, suspense, forbidden lust, violence...and lots of blood....
Carmilla has been dramatised by Robin Brooks, an actor, dramatist and author who has been working as a playwright for over 25 years. Carmilla was directed by Fiona McAlpine of Allegra Productions for Audible Originals.

Most amazing Audible performance ever !
Loved it. Just wish the ending of the story was longer, it felt rushed, a shame.

Original written BEFORE Dracula
Not my usual genre, truly fascinated that this came out BEFORE Dracula. The chemistry between Laura and Camila is fascinating.
Truly enjoyable production

A master vampire tale
This is an amazing dramatization of the book. The voice acting is spot on with how I imagine the characters, especially the woman who voices Carmilla. Her voice is so beautiful yet dark. You be missing out if you don't download this.

Spooky listen, in all the best ways.
Got this in time for Halloween. It was a captivating listen and good presentation of the drama. It was a bit short but that wasn't bad. I liked that it was a continuous drama versus indicating chapters as others do.

Passable Interpretation. Avoid Headphones
This dramatization of a classic Vampire story set in Victorian Styria (Austria) is quite good. J.S. Le Fanu wrote a well-paced, well-contrived plot involving a young woman ('Laura') being stalked/infected by a quasi-lesbian "friend" ('Carmilla') who was left in her family's care after a carriage accident just outside of their manse. The story is creepy, gothically atmospheric, and moderately upsetting (it may not be appropriate for little kids - older teens, however, should be fine with it if you plan on listening in a car ride to Grandma's house).
The production value from Audible Originals is variable. The full-cast performance is *excellent* (all characters speak with convincing tones of anger/confusion/fear) and background noise/music/sound effects provide a cinema-quality spectacle, but the sound editors have trouble with sound modulation - volume during dialogue varies from too quiet to uncomfortably loud. Using Earbuds for this recording would be a mistake.
I am grateful to Audible for making this short classic story (predating Stoker's 'Dracula' by decades) available for free with my subscription - It's an enjoyable couple of hours for fans of radioplays - but I would spend my Credit elsewhere if they asked for it. This iteration of 'Carmilla' rates 6 stars out if 10.
