Publisher's Summary

National best seller!

Top 10 book of the year for USA Today.

One of the best books of the year: O Magazine, Christian Science Monitor, Minneapolis Star-Tribune, The Times (London).

A charming new novel of self-discovery and second chances from the best-selling, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Spool of Blue Thread.

Willa Drake can count on one hand the defining moments of her life. In 1967, she is a schoolgirl coping with her mother's sudden disappearance. In 1977, she is a college coed considering a marriage proposal. In 1997, she is a young widow trying to piece her life back together. And in 2017, she yearns to be a grandmother but isn't sure she ever will be. Then, one day, Willa receives a startling phone call from a stranger. Without fully understanding why, she flies across the country to Baltimore to look after a young woman she's never met, her nine-year-old daughter, and their dog, Airplane. This impulsive decision will lead Willa into uncharted territory - surrounded by eccentric neighbors who treat each other like family, she finds solace and fulfillment in unexpected places.

A bewitching novel of hope and transformation, Clock Dance gives us Anne Tyler at the height of her powers.

What the critics say

“Tyler’s characteristic warmth and affection for her characters are engaging as ever... [They are] all vibrantly portrayed with her usual low-key gusto and bracingly dark humor... Power dynamics are never simple in Tyler’s portraits of marriage.” (Kirkus Reviews)

Was Sad to Finish this Book

I love Anne Tyler's books and this one didn't disappoint. Her characters are so well defined and she captures the intricacies of human relationships so beautifully. I'm always a bit sad to finish one of her books as I always get attached to the characters that she creates. #Audible1

Loved this book !

Anne Tylor always creates the most lovable, slightly flawed characters. I sympathized with the main character in this one. The neighbourhood in Baltimore seemed a bit unreal -idealistic . The scene though is charming and enjoyable to imagine. The author explores truism about the human experience. Love, connection and a sense of purpose are fundamental to enjoy a meaningful existence. Overall a wonderful read !

My new favourite Anne Tyler book

As a 60 year old whose been reading Anne Tyler since dinner at the homesick restaurant I found this novel hugely satisfying. It had the sweet, gentle flow of her other novels and I really liked Willa. But the portrayal of Denise and Cheryl’s neiborhood really captured my interest. All of the characters on that street were distinct and charming.

The way this story stretches from Willa at age 10 to 21 to 43 and 62 really allows one to see how Willa’s personality remains the same but also changes.

The conclusion of the novel was reListic but uplifting.
