Daphne du Mauriers Erzählung "The Birds" erschien 1952 in ihrem Kurzgeschichten-Band "The Apple Tree". Als elf Jahre später Hitchcocks Film in die Kinos kam, wurde das Buch unter "The Birds and Other Stories" neu aufgelegt.
Eine plötzliche "Neuauflage" der Naturgesetze erfährt in der Story Nat Hocken, Landarbeiter in Cornwall: Große Mengen Vögel sammeln sich über der See und in der folgenden Nacht über seinem Haus. Nat wird attackiert. Im Dorf nimmt den Vorfall niemand weiter ernst. Der extreme Wetterwechsel wird die Tiere irritiert haben.
Doch die Vögel werden aggressiver, riesige Schwärme Möwen, Krähen und sogar Spatzen formieren sich und greifen mit offenbar tödlicher Absicht an - mittlerweile in ganz England. Die Regierung erklärt den Ausnahmezustand. Nat verbarrikadiert sich mit seiner Familie im Haus. Für ein paar Tage werden Vorräte und Feuerholz reichen - und danach?
