Effy Sayre has always believed in fairy tales. Haunted by visions of the Fairy King since childhood, she’s had no choice. Her tattered copy of Angharad—Emrys Myrddin’s epic about a mortal girl who falls in love with the Fairy King, then destroys him—is the only thing keeping her afloat. So when Myrddin’s family announces a contest to redesign the late author’s estate, Effy feels certain it’s her destiny. But musty, decrepit Hiraeth Manor is an impossible task, and its residents are far from welcoming.

The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

As a child, Kissen saw her family murdered by a fire god. Now, she makes a living killing them and enjoys it. But all this changes when Kissen is tasked with helping a young noble girl with a god problem. The child’s soul is bonded to a tiny god of white lies, and Kissen can’t kill it without ending the girl’s life too.
Joined by a disillusioned knight on a secret quest, the unlikely group must travel to the ruined city of Blenraden, where the last of the wild gods reside, to each beg a favor. Great found family and cool world!
First things first, I absolutely love the world building with the God concepts with their shrines and rebirth and such! I'm a big sucker for worldbuilding!
I loved the dynamic most between Kissan and Inara, the "Found older sister/mentor" dynamic between them was great. I did, however, think Inara's "12 yr old" voice as a character seemed a little too logical thinking and mature by the end, that maybe her thought process was more than 12. but after all she's been through, it's not entirely impossible.
SKEDI, i loved then was annoyed with then liked this little God. his character voice was my favourite out of the group, I was a little sad that we didn't get much of his back story by the end of the book, though. just little memory snippits.
Elo, i so so so wanted to like him. the first chapter with him in Aaren was so nice. the bread details were very homey, and i could SMELL the fresh baked bread. i so badly wanted Elo and Aaren to be gay too, i felt like it was leaning but didn't. By the last 3rd of the book, i felt disconnected from Elo. his character chapters felt most distant than the others, and his motive felt very flat, though consistent, throughout the book.
Kissan was my favourite overall character. she didn't come off as your usual "tough FMC/not like other girls," and I greatly loved the use of Sign. i loved her conflict with the relationship of her and Gods. i loved her from the start. My only issue is her relationship with Elo. again that his voice felt so distant, and it felt unneeded for them to have a one night stand. one can argue that it was for the trust bond, but i could argue it didn't need to be written that way. (And that's not because I wanted Elo to be gay).
Performance: I think the Narrator was a little stiff. I acknowledge that trying for voices and being bad at it is worse than not trying for voices at all. But this Narrator's word just felt stiffer than usual for me. i read the physical book as well as listened to the audio separately.
I'll still eagerly await the sequel!
