Description

Read by the author.

New York Times best-selling author Donald Miller shares the plan that led him to turn his life around.

There are four characters in every story: the victim, the villain, the hero, and the guide. These four characters live inside us. If we play the victim, we’re doomed to fail. If we play the villain, we will not create genuine bonds. But if we play the hero or guide, our lives will flourish. The hard part is being self-aware enough to know which character we are playing.

In this book, Donald will use his own experiences to help you recognize if the character you are currently surfacing is helping you experience a life of meaning. He breaks down the transformational, yet practical, plan that took him from slowly giving up to rapidly gaining a new perspective of his own life’s beauty and meaning, igniting his motivation, passion, and productivity, so you can do the same.

The lessons in this book will teach you how to:

  • Help you discover when you are playing the victim and villain.
  • Create a simple life plan that will bring clarity and meaning to your goals ahead.
  • Take control of your life by choosing to be the hero in your story.
  • Cultivate a sense of creativity about what your life can be.
  • Move beyond just being productive to experiencing a deep sense of meaning.

Donald Miller will help you identify the many chances you have of being the hero in your life, and the times when you are falling into the trap of becoming the victim. He will guide you in developing a unique plan that will speak to the challenges you currently face so you, too, can find the fulfillment you have been searching for in your life and work.

My favourite Donald Miller book

This is by far my most favorite, Donald Miller book so far (I will add that I mostly listen to it at 1.1 and 1.2 speed).

The audiobook does a beautiful job delving into the attitude we take on, and the subsequent victim or villain, or heroic actions that follow.

I highly recommend this book. And I think Deepak Chopra‘s “abundance” would be a great follow up.

Should have killed your darlings

The author's books on marketing are great. This one, however, was a self-indulgent psychotherapy session that never seemed to end. The entire thing is basically all the cultural rah-rah we've had to endure in memes over the last four years on life positivity on the internet -- made into a long-in-the-tooth audio book. Half of the book is the author digressing about what it takes to write a book. And the advice is terrible and depressing, hence the author's quote in the title of my review. I've written 26 novels and the best ones I wrote in less than 3 weeks. However, this isn't a supposed to be a book sbout chaining yourself to a writing desk for 30 minutes a day - its about bring the hero on your own mission. The other half of the book is the writer espousing his Goosehill project and rehashing this and other stories ad nausem. Verbiage is so contrite and full of cliches it literally sounds like a droning speech from your mom which you quickly close your ears to. The book constantly alludes to these hero daily planning sheets which are just accessed on the website. You dont need God-knows how many hours of rehashed examples of do-goodery to figure out how to use basic downloadable planning sheet you could get for free just about anywhere. I have no qualms with anyone writing a book. You can and should write what appeals to you. It's a free country. But this was painful and without passion for me. The endless verbosity and rehashing of simple concepts was unreal. This was said as a consumer; as a human, the author is leading a good life trying to help others which is admirable. But I didn't want to read a memoir. He should have titled it: LISTEN TO MY LIFE STORY AND APPLAUD ME FOR IT. Then I wouldn't have expected to necessarily gain anything for myself, and bought a different book.
