A heartbreaking and hilarious memoir by iCarly and Sam & Cat star Jennette McCurdy about her struggles as a former child actor—including eating disorders, addiction, and a complicated relationship with her overbearing mother—and how she retook control of her life.

Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction,” eating little and weighing herself five times a day. She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income.

In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail—just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true. Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly, she is thrust into fame. Though Mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi (“Hi Gale!”), Jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships. These issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother dies of cancer. Finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, Jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants.

Told with refreshing candor and dark humor, I’m Glad My Mom Died is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.

A must read

I am genuinely at a loss of words. This book is so important and needed to be made. I couldn’t stop listening I needed to listen to it all in one day. As someone who grew up in an abusive household I related so much to the experiences and feelings shared. It’s such a powerful book needed to be heard by everyone. No matter someone’s fame, privilege etc. there can be abuse, deep pain and trauma someone is dealing with behind curtains. This book lights passion in me and reminds me how important it is to share your traumas with the world in hopes that the more conversations we have about this the more change will happen. Thank you Jennette. Sincerely thank you.

Truly eye opening

Listening to this book was truly eye opening. It takes a high level of courage to write about your life, especially when you write about vulnerable experiences. This book is a beautiful reminder that we truly do not know what it happening in someone’s life. Thank you Jennette for sharing with us. You are truly inspiring. I know your words have helped me recognize situations in my own life and have encouraged me to tackle my own demons. Thank you.

best book ever

I feel guilty writing that as a title because this girl's upbringing was shit - but it was an amazing "read" and she told the story so eloquently. it was funny and sad and now that it's over I feel weird.

Mothers Should Read This

This book is so important.

As someone who has ‘mommy issues’ I found this book deeply relatable and insightful. Too many times people who have difficult relationships with their mothers are dismissed and their voices lost and unheard.

McCurdy’s memoir opens the door for discussion on abuse and generational trauma while still being respectful and ultimately true to herself. I wish her luck in her ongoing recovery.
