Story
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so. But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn.

A short story from British Library Crime Classic Deep Waters. The character that made Bailey’s name is the medically trained detective Reggie Fortune, and he’s at his best in this short story investigating a murder and the disappearance of a nurse at a mysterious stately home.

Publisher's Summary
The fifth entry in the CWA Gold Dagger-winning Slough House series featuring Jackson Lamb.
London Rules might not be written down, but everyone knows rule one: Cover your arse.
At MI5 headquarters Regent's Park, First Desk Claude Whelan is learning this the hard way. Tasked with protecting a beleaguered prime minister, he's facing attack from all directions himself: from the showboating MP who orchestrated the Brexit vote and now has his sights set on Number 10; from the showboat's wife, a tabloid columnist, who's crucifying Whelan in print; from the PM's favorite Muslim, who's about to be elected mayor of the West Midlands, despite the dark secret he's hiding; and especially from his own deputy, Lady Di Taverner, who's alert for Claude's every stumble. Meanwhile, the country's being rocked by an apparently random string of terror attacks.
Over at Slough House, the MI5 satellite office for outcast and demoted spies, the agents are struggling with personal problems: repressed grief, various addictions, retail paralysis, and the nagging suspicion that their newest colleague is a psychopath. Plus someone is trying to kill Roddy Ho. But collectively, they're about to rediscover their greatest strength- the ability to make a bad situation much, much worse.

Nothing Slow About Slow Horses
I'm a fan of the Apple TV+ adaptation of Mick Herron's long-running book series, which led me to try LONDON RULES in audiobook. I've never listened to an audiobook in its entirety before, as I prefer to read print versions, but I wanted to give this growing segment of the reading world a try. Thank goodness I did!
Gerard Doyle is an amazing narrator and is particularly well-suited to voicing Jackson Lamb and the other members of Slough House and Regent's Park. Mick Herron is a brilliant writer—the language rich and taut, the narrative sparkling, the story crisp.
I have now purchased book 1 in print and will continue to read the series in both print and audiobook form. Of course, I'll also continue to watch the series on Apple TV+.
Simply outstanding!

One more success
So, I am now convinced this is one of the best series I have listened to on Audible - and I’ve listened to my share. It’s the narrator with the story filled with great characters- have already purchased the next in series.
