Rosenmontag 1933: Gereon Rath feiert Karneval in Köln. Seinen neuen Fall aber erbt Gereon Rath von seinem Vorgesetzten Wilhelm Böhm, der sich unter dem Nazi-Polizeipräsidenten ins politische Abseits manövriert hat: Ein Obdachloser ist erstochen am Nollendorfplatz gefunden worden. Dessen Vorgeschichte führt zurück in den März 1917, als deutsche Soldaten während der »Operation Alberich« in Nordfrankreich verbrannte Erde hinterließen. Rath ermittelt, doch immer wieder funken ihm andere Dinge dazwischen. Da sind die Vorbereitungen für seine Hochzeit mit Charlie Ritter noch das geringste Problem.

Atmosphärisch und spannend

Hörenswerter weiterer Band der Rath-Serie. Der Plot spielt zu einer Schlüsselzeit der deutschen Geschichte, beginnend im März 1933.
Ereignisse wie Reichstagsbrand, Bücherverbrennung, Wahlen und Judenboykott betreffen verschiedene Protagonisten direkt. Kutscher gelingt es, die Atmosphäre im öffentlichen und privaten Leben der Zeit nachzuzeichnen. Zunehmende Verzweiflung einiger, die Hoffnung auf Verbesserung anderer, Ehrgeiz, Alltagsbewältigung, die Angst vor Abrutschen in die Armut - all das bietet den Hintergrund für eine raffinierte Story. Sie ist kompliziert gestrickt, man muss bisweilen konzentriert zuhören, den Faden nicht zu verlieren.
