Description

A powerful ruler, an alluring young woman, a scandal that would rock the nation: Anne Boleyn’s life story sounds more like a juicy TV docu-drama than a chapter of English history. Although she is not of noble birth or even especially beautiful, Anne Boleyn manages to rise to the very pinnacle of the English aristocracy.

Renowned for her extraordinarily vivid recreations of historical events, Carolly Erickson brings out the full fascinating story of the enigmatic Anne Boleyn. Erickson paints an engaging portrait of this intriguing woman and her tragic life, from her early education in court intrigue, through her courtship and controversial marriage to Henry VIII, to the day she mounts the scaffold.

With her expertise in the Tudor period, her sensitivity to sexual and political nuance, and her eminently readable prose style, Carolly Erickson is the ideal biographer for the elusive Anne Boleyn. Narrator Simon Prebble’s elegant performance evokes all of the bittersweet drama of Boleyn’s exceptional life and the tumultuous times in which she lived.

the author vilified Anne

it didn't feel like a balanced historical record because the author seemed to really turn Anne Boleyn into some kind of horrible villain. She was a human being and of course she wasn't perfect and she had her personality quirks and idiosyncrasies like we all do, but to showcase her as if she were a devilish witchy manipulator isn't correct in my estimation. She was a woman during a time when being a woman meant being subjugated and oppressed by the patriarchy. Men ruled the day and those men included your uncles, brothers, cousins and definitely your father. Being at court and having the king's favor was everybody's goal pretty much. All of the nobility wanted to rise in the ranks and they would do whatever they had to do to get there. They would lie, cheat, manipulate, and they would definitely use women to do this. Anne was a victim plain and simple. A victim of the times, a victim of the patriarchy, and definitely a victim of the king. What is not usually discussed in any of these historical references is the fact that King Henry himself most likely had a traumatic brain injury which caused him to become so tyrannical and cruel. The man he was in his youth and earlier years is not the man that he was at the end of his life. This has often been attributed to three severe accidents to his brain. The last one being the most severe where he was unconscious for 2 hours. This one is mentioned in this book but not expanded upon. It's a miracle he survived. I have experienced traumatic brain injury in someone I love very closely and the personality changes that can happen are startling. They can go from being a benign gentle person to a complete monster but also vice versa. It should have been more widely presented in this as a potential for King Henry's attitude. Yes this book was about Anne Boleyn but conversely she should not have been treated so harshly in this modern day retelling. It's like she's being accused and murdered all over again. The author notwithstanding, the reader was fantastic, I enjoyed his voice and would definitely listen to more of his work. But if you have a broader understanding of social issues, and definitely the issues of women in historical times, you will most likely find this to be a dreadful retelling of Anne's life. May she rest in peace.

revisionist history!

there are so many things wrong with this book! it is written to be an accurate, nonfiction story of Anne Boleyn's life and yet it contains far more untruths than truths. I did not even finish it. very disappointing
