Story
From the moment Dara of Westwood spied the Silver Headed Raptor nesting in Rundeval Peak, the precocious redheaded 12-year-old girl was enchanted. The youngest daughter of the Master of the Wood lived in ramshackle Westwood Hall, in the independently minded Westwood estate of Sevendor. Her determination to capture a baby falcon and train it wasn’t hampered by the fact that Dara had never climbed a mountain, had never been trained in falconry, or even remotely had permission from her father to do it.

Story
The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

Accidentally murdered by a cleric in another universe during a botched resurrection, Arnold, a semi-pro gamer, wakes upon an altar to find himself incarnated into the overweight body of a farmer who could have been his fatter twin. He’s not the hero. He’s not the villain. He’s certainly not the chosen one who is there to save the world. He’s a clerical error. It could be a bad joke, but apparently, it happens so often that they have a standard procedure for returning you.

Publisher's Summary
Nominee, Audie Awards - Fantasy, 2018
Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese.
For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.
Then one night Minalan is forced to pick up his mageblade again to defend his adopted home from the vanguard of an army of goblins - gurvani, they call themselves - bent on a genocidal crusade against all mankind. And that was the good news. The bad news was that their shamans were armed with more magical power than has been seen since the days of the ancient Imperial Magocracy - and their leader, a mysterious, vengeful force of hate and dark magic, is headed directly to Boval Vale, along with a massive invading army of gurvani. The good people of Boval and their spellmonger have only one choice: To hole up in the over-sized Boval Castle and hope they can endure a siege against hundreds of thousands of goblins.
When the people look to him for hope, Minalan does his best, but the odds are depressing: There are multitudes of goblins, and they want Boval Vale as a staging ground for a vengeful invasion of the whole Five Duchies. Add to his troubles a jealous rival mage, a motley band of mercenaries, a delusional liege lord who insists victory is at hand despite the hordes at his door, a dour castellan, a moody, pregnant girlfriend, and a catty ex-girlfriend who specializes in sex magic - all trapped in a stinking, besieged castle with no hope of rescue, and you'll understand why Minalan is willing to take his chances with the goblins.
All that stands between the gurvani horde and the people of the Five Duchies is one tired, overwhelmed baker's son who wanted nothing more than to be a simple village spellmonger.

Brilliant World & Beautiful Fantasy Series
The Spellmonger series is trully winderful. Terry Mancour places depth into this massive world in a way that gives you goosbumps and quenches the craving for new high fantasy. I've read few books that engage me this well BETWEEN the lines.
John Lee is a god. The man was born for this series and I wouldnt be surprised if he is a timetraveler born in the medieval pierod.
I ripped through 14 books of the series in 8 weeks, and then started it again from book one and got so much more out of it.
Please try this book, if not for you, not for Terry, not for me, but for John f**king Lee.

Enjoyable
It's a nice first book. Maybe a bit too focused on tities and women, with a political lash out at royalty. I'm pretty sure there could be some more refinement on the sexual side, but romance and sex is always tricky - not sure how much more of the main character develops over it.
Heading for the second book now, hoping for a better development of the character sexual life - since it's not quite the focus of the story nor makes a strong part of his personality.
Hoping for the best.
Overall, the story is interesting.

Entertaining Fantasy
Terry Mancour puts together a fairly formulaic offering within the Fantasy genre with his 'Spellmonger' series. His magic system is clever but intuitive; he dutifully populates his fantasy world with a somewhat routine parade of goblins, trolls, a magical sylvan species, and undead necromancers; and the relationship between the human aristocracy and the peasants is well-described but typically anti-elite (of course the rich & powerful are the "bad guys"). Mancour's descriptions are vivid, his characters are interesting (the protagonist - Minalan - is flawed but relatable - if a little sex-obsessed), and his dialogue is realistic.. but overall this book is distinctly average.
[Note: Mancour also writes with way too much colloquialism.. he nicely crafts a potentially immersive setting and then, frustratingly, takes the reader out of it with expletives and sophomoric thoughts & actions (Try to picture Gandalf telling Pippin that Denethor is, quote, "A Piece of Shit" and talking about "nailing" Galadriel.. kinda takes you out of the moment, don't it?)]
I must say John Lee turns in an above-average reading performance in this audiobook. His tone is exemplary, he reads with suitable interest, and his voice-acting is unparalleled.
Regrettably, he also exhibits an odd, lilting cadence. It gets annoying after awhile rather than becoming less noticeable (Note: Increasing playback speed to 1.15X helped somewhat).
In toto, this fun but unspectacular audiobook merits 6.5 stars out of 10. I have to admit I found the setting enjoyable - despite the cookie-cutter aspects - and although the writing is somewhat juvenile, I liked the action-driven plot and roller-coaster ride pacing.
I am curious where Mancour can take this World (Callidore) that he's creating (I will be continuing with the 'Spellmonger' series. Although you could justifiably pass, you are certainly welcome to join me..)

I'm glad it was on sale so I could give it a try.
At first i was a little apprehensive of starting a series with the 10th book having just been released, luckily for me the series was put on sale so I grabbed Spellmonger for cheap and I'm glad I did.
While I won't say this book is perfect the characters are strong, the story is memorable and the magic both fantastical but scientific. the narrator on top of everything was an great choice.
I would recommend this book to any fantasy reader.

phenomenal voice actor, fun story concept, poor writing and women are just objects
consistently has lines that stick out and don't match the tone of the rest of the story. women are treated as potential sex holes. The first description of a female character is about her heaving breasts. can we not? I was looking forward to a fun, quick fantasy read. But this is intolerable to try to get through. very disappointed. The voice actor reading the book was absolutely fantastic and I will be looking for other things He's done instead.

Sex magic is just stupid. Sorry, it just is. The main character was enjoyable but was portrayed as if he was an old, wizened man often. IIRC he was a young adult.

Interesting audio book
Overall i would say don't expect this to be a well thought out adventure with a lot of interesting turn of events or character development. I went into this book completely blind and was a little disappointed after listening to it. Overall it's a casual listen, might be a good introduction into fantasy novels.
