Publisher's Summary

Three men meet on a ship bound for Haiti, where corruption and terror reign. Disillusioned and noncommittal, they are the “comedians” of Greene’s title, hiding from life’s pain and love behind their chosen masks.

What the critics say

ironically over serious

I know I know, the word Comedians used here is the French version, meaning "Actors", the author being a sort of Europhile. In either case, he sure was acting pretentious when he wrote the more naval gazing passages in this book.

I liked it anyways, the love triangles, the depiction of Haiti, and the life of Rogues was compelling.

The voice actor did not perform the French voices well.

Engaging, set in Haiti

I think this may be the first book of fiction I have read set in Haiti. It gave me echos of Hemingway’s writing about Cuba. This was also my first Graham Greene book, and WOW! I was totally engaged throughout. He obviously has a good understanding of international diplomacy and the goings on at the edges of what is legal. Nice character development.
