It has been 20 years since the end of the war. The dictatorial Augurs, once thought of almost as gods, were overthrown and wiped out during the conflict, their much-feared powers mysteriously failing them. Those who had ruled under them, men and women with a lesser ability known as the Gift, avoided the Augurs' fate only by submitting themselves to the rebellion's Four Tenets.

Publisher's Summary
A staggering defeat on the border of Adro and Kez leaves Tamas and his powder mages in grave danger and cut off from all aid. Meanwhile, deadly political games threaten his allies at home.
When invasion looms...
Tamas's invasion of Kez ends in disaster when a Kez counter-offensive leaves him cut off behind enemy lines with only a fraction of his army, no supplies, and no hope of reinforcements. Drastically outnumbered and pursued by the enemy's best, he must lead his men on a reckless march through northern Kez to safety, and back over the mountains so that he can defend his country from an angry god, Kresimir.
But the threats are closer to home...
In Adro, Inspector Adamat wants only to rescue his wife. To do so he must track down and confront the evil Lord Vetas. He has questions for Vetas concerning his enigmatic master, but the answers will lead Adamat on a darker journey.Who will lead the charge?
Tamas's generals bicker among themselves, the brigades lose ground every day beneath the Kez onslaught, and Kresimir wants the head of the man who shot him in the eye. With Tamas and his powder cabal presumed dead, Taniel Two-shot finds himself as the last line of defense against Kresimir's advancing army.
The Crimson Campaign continues the most acclaimed and action-packed new epic fantasy series in years, following on from Promise of Blood - an adrenaline-fuelled debut of flintlock mages, civil war, and cold-blooded murder in a world where gods walk the Earth.

A great sequel
I really enjoyed this book. It keeps the thread from the first book and runs with it well. There were a few weaknesses of characters and predictable moments but I honestly liked following along with their stories. I feel that the ending left something to be desired but it also means I just need to get into book 3! Rodska was excellent as always, no complaints at all and the distinct character voices were full of emotion and were really well done.

The Crimson Campaign
I found the pacing in the second book of The Powder Mage trilogy infinitely better than the first! I'm seriously growing to enjoy Christian Rodska's style of narration. Still feels like he's a bit lacking in making female characters' voice sound feminine, but he is a Male, so what can you do :-P All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this!

Gritty and Thrilling!
This has been a fantastic series so far! Really enjoyed the performance of Christian Rodska, he is a master of accents and complements the gritty nature of this book.
I like McClellan’s talent of writing a gripping and fully entrancing story but keeping it full of opposition and the realities of life. Really enjoyed the first two books, and can not wait for the third one.

Page turner
Well worth the read. Like the longest short story ever. He keeps a 3ish perspective tale going to rotate between character development, action sequences and just enough misdirection to make plot twists not too obvious. It also allows enough characters to allow “good” and “bad” guys to be killed off without having to introduce more as a afterthought to have people to work with in the next book. Narrator is next level, a stand out performance that feels more like a cast performance but less jarring than switching actors or prioritizing lines over cohesive plot. That being said “Nicklaus!!!” Is definitely the best line I have ever heard performed in an audiobook, hands down.
