Story
Winter lasts most of the year at the edge of the Russian wilderness, and in the long nights, Vasilisa and her siblings love to gather by the fire to listen to their nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, Vasya loves the story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon. Wise Russians fear him, for he claims unwary souls, and they honor the spirits that protect their homes from evil. Then Vasya’s widowed father brings home a new wife from Moscow. Fiercely devout, Vasya’s stepmother forbids her family from honoring their household spirits, but Vasya fears what this may bring.

Beautiful and Exciting
An absolutely beautiful story about family, courage, prejudice, and legacy. Beautifully written with fantastic characters, this is a series I wholeheartedly recommend to all lovers of fantasy and Russian folklore.
Vasya continues to be one of my favourite fantasy protagonists. Despite what everyone tells her, Vasya refuses to obey the standards society sets for her. Instead, she forges her own path and makes her own choices, never backing down even when the situation spirals out control.
The relationship Vasya has with her family--both those she's met and those she is introduced to--is delightfully complex. Choices are made, arguments are hand, and nothing is simple for our tenacious hero. The same can be said of the friends she makes, as some of them carry devastating secrets.
There are more action set pieces, especially near the end, which make for a thrilling read. All of the descriptions and prose are elegant and truly bring to life the majesty of Russian history. I've adored both books in the series so far and can't wait to see how it wraps up.

Captivating
I have listened to this book twice now, I am completely captivated by the main characters and Katherine Arden has done an amazing job creating this trilogy of books. It awoke a love of Slavic Folklore I didn't know I would have ever enjoyed. It is well written and was very well performed. I couldn't stop listening. It was such a great story. You cannot help but fall in love with the characters!

A great story, performance. Does not disappoint!
It is easy to fall in love with these characters and with the mideval Russian world the author has painted so vividly! Highly recommend (along with the first book of the series).
