Story
In 1857, a woman escaped enslavement on a North Carolina plantation and fled to a farm in New York. In hiding, she worked on a manuscript that would make her famous long after her death. The novel, The Bondwoman’s Narrative, was first published in 2002 to great acclaim, but the author’s identity remained unknown. Over a decade later, Professor Gregg Hecimovich unraveled the mystery of the author’s name and, in The Life and Times of Hannah Crafts, he finally tells her story.

Story
A middle-aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He is drawn to the farm at the end of the road, where, when he was seven, he encountered a most remarkable girl, Lettie Hempstock. Forty years earlier, a man committed suicide in a stolen car at this farm at the end of the road. Like a fuse on a firework, his death lit a touchpaper and resonated in unimaginable ways. The darkness was unleashed, something scary and thoroughly incomprehensible to a little boy. And Lettie - magical, comforting, wise beyond her years - promised to protect him, no matter what.

Baumgartner’s life had been defined by his deep, abiding love for his wife, Anna, who was killed in a swimming accident nine years earlier. Now 71, Baumgartner continues to struggle to live in her absence as the novel sinuously unfolds into spirals of memory and reminiscence, delineated in episodes spanning from 1968, when Sy and Anna meet as broke students working and writing in New York, through their passionate relationship over the next 40 years, and back to Baumgartner’s youth in Newark and his Polish-born father’s life as a dress-shop owner and failed revolutionary.

Publisher's Summary
Audie Award Winner, Solo Narration - Male, 2014
Audie Award Winner, Literary Fiction, 2014
The author of the classic best-sellers The Secret History and The Little Friend returns with a brilliant, highly anticipated new novel.
Composed with the skills of a master, The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity.
It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.
As an adult, Theo moves silkily between the drawing rooms of the rich and the dusty labyrinth of an antiques store where he works. He is alienated and in love - and at the center of a narrowing, ever-more-dangerous circle.
The Goldfinch is a novel of shocking narrative energy and power. It combines unforgettably vivid characters, mesmerizing language, and breathtaking suspense, while plumbing with a philosopher's calm the deepest mysteries of love, identity, and art. It is a beautiful, stay-up-all-night and tell-all-your-friends triumph, an old-fashioned story of loss and obsession, survival and self-invention, and the ruthless machinations of fate.

Fantastic way to fully absorb this book
David Pittu should win some kind of award for his performance in this book. Every accent, every person he portrayed was executed to perfection.
Boris, Amazing. Xandra, hilariously accurate. Hobie, perfection.... But Theo.... Theo was obviously the best.

Excessive overthinking.
Poor Theo with all his street smarts he just didn’t seem to get it later on in life and makes all kinds of mistakes always questioning always wondering. In the end he has wonderful words, but nothing to show for it.

Absolute Perfection
This is one of the best books, if not the best book, I have heard. The narrator is beyond amazing and brought the book to life. I couldn't get enough of the book (dont let the length scare you) and didnt want it to end. The story is compelling, timely and a wonderful commentary on the human experience. I would recommend this book 100%

Good story but patience required.
This is not a quick listen. Patience is needed and you must not be in a hurry to unwind the story. There are moments where I had to fast forward to keep my interest. A brilliant story but sometimes felt the author was lost in the details rather then the story itself.

Good. Worth listening to,but not Pulizer material
Narration was excellent. The characterizations sound a bit cartoonish at first, but D.Pittu does accents and narrative tone well, and makes the characters immediatly distinct from each other, reducing the amount of attention it takes to listen.
The story was engaging, and easy to follow. The characters are two dimensional, uncomplicated, predictable. The story is about as complex and nuanced as you would expect in an advanced YA novel. It is a good entertainment, nothing more.

One of my forever favourites
I loved this so much I listened to it twice back to back. The narration is incredible. The story is heart wrenching but wonderful. I had to listen to the very end a couple times to really absorb the depth of what the author was saying. I love this book and it will forever be a favourite.
