Story
It seemed the unthinkable had happened. Someone had actually targeted the Ghalian, an order of assassins known and feared across the systems. It was madness. Only a fool would go after the likes of them. But, it seemed, the galaxy had no shortage of fools. Retaliation most bloody was in order, and one man stood ready to spring into action. Hozark was his name, and he was no ordinary man. He was a Master Ghalian, an assassin skilled in the ways of death. Practical, mechanical, magical, to him it made no difference.

Story
Minalan gave up a promising career as a professional warmage to live the quiet life of a village spellmonger in the remote mountain valley of Boval. It was a peaceful, beautiful little fief, far from the dangerous feudal petty squabbles of the Five Duchies, on the world of Callidore. There were cows. Lots of cows. And cheese. For six months things went well: He found a quaint little shop, he befriended the local lord, the village folk loved him, he found a sharp young apprentice to help out, and, best yet, he met a comely young widow with the prettiest eyes.

Story
The ancient magic of wizards was anything but dark. It was the enlightenment that lifted humanity from the squalor of superstition, and the worship of fell spirits and capricious gods, but those days are gone. The shining glory of the sorcerers burned away the subtlety of wisdom, replacing it with easy power, held only in the hands of the elite - a new age built upon the elemental supremacy of aristocrats and the ignorance of the masses.

It exploded out of Somalia and spread across the oceans before anybody thought to look up from their cell phones to see what was going on. The infected breathed the virus into the air around them, spreading it through the cities faster than anyone thought possible. Hospitals were overwhelmed. Police lines crumbled. Much better than expected!
Early on, the book felt like it would be a stereotypical fantasy filled with cliches. However, by the middle I was hooked. It quickly moves away from these and into its own unique story. The first book was good. The second and third were great!

Surprisingly enjoyable
I bought this compilation on a whim while looking for a distraction between scifi series, and this was perfect. It's easy listening, with a storyline that progresses both character and world development, and narration that is consistent and pleasing to the ear. Sometimes it meanders toward the tween-level of depth, but it works with the character in question.

with expected and unexpected twists.
would happily read more stories with these characters in them.
The books in the series move naturally from one to the next. Good conclusions between, but continuing the story without making you feel like you missed much.

Engrossing and elegant
The narrator is terrific, the world and characters entertaining and rich. Lots of plot twists, some predictable but mostly believable and well-written. There are places that drag, but the author has done a remarkable job of tying disparate characters and themes together.
