Story
The Ape That Understood the Universe is the story of the strangest animal in the world: the human animal. It opens with a question: How would an alien scientist view our species? What would it make of our sex differences, our sexual behavior, our child-rearing patterns, our moral codes, our religions, our languages, and science? The book tackles these issues by drawing on ideas from two major schools of thought: evolutionary psychology and cultural evolutionary theory.

This urgent and eye-opening book makes the case that protecting humanity's future is the central challenge of our time. If all goes well, human history is just beginning. Our species could survive for billions of years - enough time to end disease, poverty, and injustice, and to flourish in ways unimaginable today. But this vast future is at risk. With the advent of nuclear weapons, humanity entered a new age, where we face existential catastrophes - those from which we could never come back.

A belief in free will touches nearly everything that human beings value. It is difficult to think about law, politics, religion, public policy, intimate relationships, morality—as well as feelings of remorse or personal achievement—without first imagining that every person is the true source of his or her thoughts and actions. And yet the facts tell us that free will is an illusion.

Story
Most people, including many policy makers, activists, scientists, and philosophers, have encouraged us to be more empathetic - to feel the pain and pleasure of others. Yale researcher and author Paul Bloom argues that this is a mistake. Far from leading us to improve the lives of others, empathy is a capricious and irrational emotion that appeals to our narrow prejudices. It muddles our judgment and often leads to cruelty. We are at our best when we are smart enough not to rely on it and draw upon a more distanced compassion.

Story
In The Blank Slate, Steven Pinker, one of the world's leading experts on language and the mind, explores the idea of human nature and its moral, emotional, and political colorings. With characteristic wit, lucidity, and insight, Pinker argues that the dogma that the mind has no innate traits, denies our common humanity and our individual preferences, replaces objective analyses of social problems with feel-good slogans, and distorts our understanding of politics, violence, parenting, and the arts.

If we all want love, why is there so much conflict in our most cherished relationships? To answer this question we must look into our evolutionary past, argues prominent psychologist David M. Buss. Based one of the largest studies of human mating ever undertaken, encompassing more than 10,000 people of all ages from 37 cultures worldwide, The Evolution of Desire is the first work to present a unified theory of human mating behavior.

Thoroughly fascinating
Very well written. Can be verbose at times (e.g. too much coverage of Darwin's personal life) but the author does make good points with all that detail. Not for the faint-hearted; shatters illusions about altruism with an unfiltered exploration of evolutionary psychology.

Wright on
Informative, logical, well written. This book showed how biological evolution can explain much otherwise puzzling human behaviour.

An excellent and important work that holds up
Truly an excellent book that only occasionally reminds the reader that it was written in the 90s. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in really understanding the origins behind our shared moral inclinations, and an exploration of what those inclinations are.
And despite the book ruining some of the "magic" of altruism and brotherly love, it ends on a surprisingly upbeat note.

Good book, good approach to the topic
I truly enjoyed the book, the evolutionary psychology perspective taken was very interesting, I also think that the references to Darwin life were really good maybe the best part. There are some claims made throughout the book that need some verification but overall a really good book, highly recommended.
The narration is also very good it makes the book more enjoyable
