Publisher's Summary

New York Times best-selling author Alexander McCall Smith, winner of the first-ever Saga Award for Wit, has entertained millions with his beloved No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency mysteries. Now this phenomenally popular author introduces a fresh series, brimming with the charm and humor his stable of dedicated fans can't get enough of.

Isabel Dalhousie is a philosopher by training, and an amateur sleuth by choice. When a young man falls from a balcony to his death, Isabel's curiosity is aroused. She does not believe the fall was an accident, and she is determined to root out the truth. With a little help from some friends (her housekeeper, her niece, and her niece's rather attractive ex-boyfriend), Isabel plunges into the shady business community of Edinburgh to find some answers.

With its distinctive characters and captivating suspense, The Sunday Philosophy Club further cements McCall Smith's status as one of today's most imaginative and enjoyable authors.

Very Good!

McCall Smith is the only author of cozy mysteries that I’ll read. He doesn’t reduce himself to the silliness in most of them. Intelligent books but still a fun read or “listen”. The narrator was very good too.

Good character development personal insights.

Very likeable characters. Tied
In with narrative of practical philosophy in every day life. The stray thoughts that we all encounter while walking out way through life. And possibly naïvely depicts that daily life of British social life, but one can imagine how it could be. With written instructions to social gatherings and make of new friends across generations.

A good start to a series

Davina Porter is a superb narrator making listening easy and enjoyable. She also gets the nuances making you feel the emotions of the characters especially fear. I enjoyed getting to know the main characters and the no nonsense Grace stood out as someone I looked forward to listening to. The murder mystery was good but it was second fiddle to the relationships and moral decisions the characters were faced with. It was also interesting with the perspectives of two different generations. The older firmly holding on to past ways and trying to make sense of the younger generation who did not feel the same constraints as those raised by Victorians. I really liked the moral essays and conclusions that often echoed in Isabel's own life. They made me stop and ponder what I would do. I am looking forward to further adventures with Isabel and friends.
