Publisher's Summary

In April 1992, a young man named Chris McCandless walked into the Alaskan wilderness, where he survived for more than 100 days before perishing in an abandoned bus. For over 20 years his story has captivated millions, and yet only one person knew the truth behind his remarkable journey - until now.

Through a tumultuous childhood, the McCandless siblings clung to each other amidst a chaotic home life, forming a lifelong bond and an unbreakable trust. So when Chris abandoned nearly all of his possessions, cut off all family ties, and forged an anonymous existence on the road, Carine understood what drew Chris away from all he had known. Having to face her own truth and surmount some crushing obstacles in the absence of her beloved brother, Carine drew strength from his constant presence while forging ahead on her own unique journey.

A powerful and deeply personal story, The Wild Truth is both a revelatory glimpse into the life of Chris McCandless and the inspirational tale of one woman's resilience in the wake of unspeakable tragedy.

Revealing follow-up to Into The Wild

It’s worth the listen to hear and understand both Carine’s story, and more of Chris’.

However, I do think Carine’s story would have been better translated to page if trusted in the hands of Krakauer. There’s a reason he has an Arts and Literature Award.

At times, Carine felt like an unreliable narrator. Never in terms of what she said about her family. I believed everything she said, and feel deep sadness that people doubt what she’s been through.

However, she unironically waxes about knowing Chris better than anyone while living a lifestyle swamped in capitalism. From owning businesses and exploiting unpaid labor from her “family” of employees, to owning multiple rental properties as a landlord, I’m not sure Carine actually understood her brother as well as she thinks.

This undertone took away from the enjoyment of the book, and at times, I felt deep sadness for her.

Quite the story …. second instalment

When I learned about this book, and the death of Carine’s brother, Chris Candless, I was intrigued. Before I started listening, I learned about the relationship between her book and another book, Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer. I figured if I really wanted to understand, I should read (listen) in the order the books were published (and the truth was uncovered). So I suggest you do what I did: I stopped and listened to Into the Wild first. It’s important context.
Carine’s been book is about so much more than her brother’s death, it’s about Chris’ life, and the traumatic childhood the survived together. I appreciate Carine’s openness, as she is still coping with it all. A courageous book.

Incredible Story - Very inspirational!

I watched the movie In to the Wild first and was pretty sure there was “more to the story” but am so amazed at how much more! For these (now amazing adults) to be so “normal” is a true testimony that anyone can recover and not repeat the horrors they may have experienced in their past. Such a story of hope for those that may find themselves in similar situations growing up. I loved Chris in the movie the first time I watched it. He reminded me of my free spirited 19 year old. But after listening to this book I appreciate his spirit and wisdom even more. What a tragic loss to the world and those many lives he would have positively touched had he been given the chance to grow old. But his story was able to somehow do this anyway thanks to Carine and the other siblings. You guys are hero’s!

Alot more info

Well written, emotional roller-coaster. Tons of ups and downs in her life. You get a very in depth look about her brother, family and her life. Would definitely recommend to anyone that has invested interest of Chris and Into the wild...
