Gripping story with terrible narration

This is one of my favourite Hambly novels — great setting, compelling story, interesting characters. On the downside is the narrator, who has a lovely voice but comes across as robotic and stilted, and mispronounces words semi-regularly. And the odd choice of accents — I never got used to hearing an Irish lilt used for desert dwellers.
