Story
In Los Angeles, in 1953, six innocent people are gunned down at an all-night diner. Three policemen arrive to investigate: Ed Exley, goaded by his father's success on the force and burning to eclipse him; Bud White, witness to his mother's murder, a time bomb with a badge; and Jack Vincennes, a former addict, a shake-down artist who works celebrities. Worse yet, these three see themselves as rivals. Their rage mirrors that of the killers they seek, and all are players in a game without rules or survivors.

Story
In Achilles in Vietnam, Dr. Jonathan Shay used the story of the Iliad as a prism through which to examine how ancient and modern wars have battered the psychology of the men who fight. Now he turns his attention to the Odyssey, the story of a soldier's homecoming, to illuminate the real problems faced by combat veterans reentering civilian society. The Odyssey, Shay argues, offers explicit portrayals of behavior common among returning soldiers in our own culture: danger-seeking, womanizing, explosive violence, drug abuse, visitation by the dead, obsession, vagrancy and homelessness.

Story
The Pulitzer Prize-winning author talks candidly about his celebrated trilogy of novels, and his approach to writing the character of Frank Bascombe over 20-plus years, overthrowing some of his readers' assumptions in the course of the conversation. Symphony Space Artistic Director Isaiah Sheffer interviews Mr. Ford, whose "pitch-perfect voice takes us as close as we can get to experiencing another person's inner life" ( Newsweek).
