Angelo Cataldi waited until he was 72 to write his first book, but it was worth the wait. LOUD is the story of his hilarious, controversial 33 years as the maestro of the mania in Philadelphia sports, the morning-show provocateur at WIP from the start of the sports-radio format in the late 1980s. His path to broadcasting was a unique one, having received a master’s degree at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and making it as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 1986. In the end, though, his true calling was in front of a microphone, speaking to the biggest names before the biggest games, but also two Presidents of the United Sates and countless entertainment stars. Cataldi grew up in Providence, Rhode Island, a shy nerd who failed repeatedly on the athletic fields but was a star in the classroom and on the chess club. His career reflects a disdain for hero worship -- he often feuded with players and coaches -- fueled by the bullies in high school and a pledge to hold the stars in professional sports accountable by asking the tough questions. LOUD is the story of a journey filled with boos, parades, setbacks and ultimately some cheers. Above all, it shows a side of the notorious Philadelphia sports fans that will shock and inspire.
