Clare was born in Huntington, New York and graduated with a B.A. in Music from Boston University. She received a law degree from Hofstra University and left the practice of law to raise two children and begin writing books in 1993. Clare has taught writing workshops in elementary and middle schools throughout the Northwest and to adults at Richard Hugo House, a writers cooperative in Seattle, Washington. She is a frequent guest speaker, most recently at a Business of Writing class at Pacific Lutheran University in 2019 and will be presenting at the Fall WLA conference in Spokane, Washington in October 2020.
